ABSTRACT

Afieldtrialhasbeencarriedoutusingasetofautomaticrecordingsystem,DrivingMonitoringRecorder（DMR）andAccidentDataRecorder（ADR）installedon20vehiclesinafleetofcarsinTokyoarea,inordertoassesstheimplicationsindrivingbehaviorandaccidents.The38subjects,whodrivethe20vehiclesweremonitoredduringdrivingbytheDMRforoneyear.Simultaneously,thedatainpre-andpostaccidentwererecordedbyADRwheneveraccidentsoccurred.lnaddition,thedriverswereexaminedbyadrivingaptitudetest.

ThedatabyDMRareanalyzedfocusingonfluencyofoccurrenceofemergencybrakeoperationand/orrapidstartperformanceasrepresentingdrivingbehaviorasatrial.

The23accidentcasesincludingcrossaccident,rear-endaccident,turningaccident,arecollectedbyADRforoneyear.Theaccidentdataareanalyzedfocusingonenvironmentalconditioninpre-accidentstageanddrivingbehavior.

Relationshipsbetweendrivingbehaviorandaccidentareproposedasresultsofdataanalysis.Inparticular,theaccidentmechanismsofspecificaccidents,inwhichthesubjectrankedcarelessdriverinvolvedcanbeexplainedintermsofdrivingbehavior,whichisdeterminedbyhiscognitionand/orjudgmentwhenheisfacingspecificenvironmentalsituations.Asetoftheautomaticrecordingsystemsofferveryclearbenefitstostudytrafficaccidentmechanisminparticularonthemannerofdrivingimmediatelybeforeaccident,andtheywillprovidehithertounavailableinformationinthefieldofroadsafety.

1.INTRODUCTION

Forthepreventionoftrafficaccidents,itisimportanttoclarifytherelationshipbetweenthetrafficsituationimmediatelybeforetheoccurrenceofatrafficaccidentandthecharacteristicsofindividualdriver.Thismutualrelationship,however,issocomplicatedthataccidentinvestigationsconductedbasedonconventionalinvestigationtechniquesandmanyinspectionsandstudiesmadetoidentifythecharacteristicsofdrivershavescarcelysucceededinclarifyingit.

Drivereducationrequiresthatinformationonthesekeyfactorsleadingtoatrafficaccidentbeinformedtodriversinaconcreteandspecificmanner.Inthisdrivereducation,however,informationonhowtrafficaccidentsoccurthroughthiscomplicatedmutualrelationshipbetweenthetrafficsituationanddrivers’characteristicsisprovidedonlybrieflyandinsufficiently;morepracticaldrivereducationtechniquesneedbedeveloped.ThepreviousreportdescribedtheeffectivenessofthetechniqueofcollectingdataonthebehaviorofdriversjustbeforethetrafficaccidentsbyusingautomaticrecordingSystems.

lnthepaper,theaccidentdatarecorderanddrivingmonitoringrecorderareinstalledoncommercialvehiclesandcollected,andanalyzeddata.Specifically,theaccidentdatarecorderwasusedtocollectphysicaldataattheoccurrenceoftrafficaccidents,i.e.,thechangeinspeeds,impactacceleration,thestateofbrakingandlighting,etc.,justbeforethetrafficaccidentsandthedrivingmonitoringrecorderwasusedtocollectdataontheeverydaybehaviorofdrivers,i.e.,roadspeed,thefrequencyofrapidstartingandsuddenbraking,etc.Lnthisreport,onetrafficaccidentthatacertaindriverencounteredistakenupandthesituationinwhichthistrafficaccidentoccurredisanalyzedinfulldetail,focusingontherelationshipbetweenthetrafficsituationandthebehaviorofthisdriver.Theresultsofthisanalysisindicatethattheycanbeusedaspracticaldatafordrivereducation.Theoutlineofthisanalysisisdescribedinthefollowingchapters.

2.AUTMTICRECORDINGSYSTEM

2.1AccidentDataRecorderTheaccidentdatarecorder（ADR:

UDS2156）isthein-carrecorderdevelopedbyMANNESMANNKIEINZELwhichrecordsandstoresinmemoryonspeed,longitudinalandlateralacceleration,yawangle,brakeactivation（on/off）,leftandrightdirectionindicators（on/off）,plussixorsoon/offchannels.（3）,（4）,（5）Whileavehicleisbeingdriven,data,sampledat5OOH2,isstoredintemporarymemorywhereitiscontinuouslyanalyzedbytheaccidentdetectionalgorithm.Whenthealgorithmrecognizesthecharacteristicfeaturesofanaccident,theprevious30sandafter15sofdataistransferredincodedformtoapermanentmemory.Afterdataisstored,thisrecorderstandsby,waitingforthenextcollision.Itcanrecorddataonthefirstandsecondcollisions.
