Thesonofabarristerandlecturer,TonyBlairwasborninEdinburgh,butspentmostofhischildhoodinDurham.Attheageof14hereturnedtoEdinburghtofinishhiseducationatFettesCollege.HestudiedlawatOxford,andwentontobecomeabarristerhimself.

AfterstandingunsuccessfullyfortheLabourPartyinaby-election,BlairwentontowintheseatofSedgefieldinthe1983GeneralElection,aged30.

TonyBlairmadeaspeedyrisethroughtheranks,beingpromotedfirsttotheshadowTreasuryfrontbenchin1984.Hesubsequentlyservedasatradeandindustryspokesman,beforebeingelectedtotheShadowCabinetin1988wherehewasmadeShadowSecretaryofStateforEnergy.In1989hemovedtotheemploymentbrief.
