Manysupportersofhomeworkarguethatlifeisfilledwiththingswedon'tliketodo,andthathomeworkteachesselfdiscipline,timemanagementandothernonacademiclifeskills.Kohnchallengesthispopularidea;hesaysthatifkidshavenochoicewhenitcomestohomework,they'renotreallyexercisingjudgment,andareinsteadlosingtheirsenseofautonomy.

AttheKinoSchool,Cerasayschildrenoftenchoosetotaketheirfavoritepartsofschoolhome.“Alotofwhatweseekidsdoingiscontinuingtowriteinjournals,practicingmusicwiththeirfriends,andtakingexperimentshometoshowtheirparents,”shesays.SurveysofKinograduatessuggestthattheearlycontroltheyaregivenovertheireducationcontinuestoservethemwellintocollege,andthattheyfeelbetterequippedtomanagetheirtimeandapproachprofessorswithquestionsthanotherstudentsdo.

Oneofthereasonswhywecontinuetoassignhomework,Kohnsays,isourobsession(着迷)withstandardizedtests.Evenifwecanagreeontheimportanceofkidsdoingbetterontests,hesays,thereisnoresearchtosuggestthathomeworkisthetickettosuccess.
