Bullying(欺负)inschoolisaproblemformanystaffaswellaspupils,accordingtoateachers’unionsurvey.Thebulliesareoftenotherteacherswhopickontheircolleagues—withheadsandseniorstaffbullymostoften.Thesurveysaysaboutaquarterofteachershavebeenbulliedbyanothermemberofstaff.

Thesurveyofmorethan900primary,secondary,andfurther-educationstaffacrosstheUK,showedthatmanyteachersfacedarangeofworkplace-bullyingthreats.

Butamongtheteacherswhofelttheyhadbeenbullied,50%saiditwasbyaseniormemberofstaff,comparedwith25%bypupilsand23%byparents.

“Ididn’treportitasthepersonbullyingwastheheadteacher,”saidaprimaryschoolteacher.

“Iwasdrivenfromapreviousjobbyaheadteacher.Shelashesout(痛斥)ateverybodyaroundher,”saidasecondaryschoolteacher.

Anotherteacher,aheadofdepartmentinanacademy,said:

“followingapoorsetofresultsmywholedepartmenthavebeenspokentoagain.Asaresulttwoareleavingandotherswouldiftheycould.”

Thesurveylookedatthetypeofbullyingthattheseteachershadfacedfrompupils,parentsandfellowteachers.Themostwidespreadformsofbullyingwere“negativecomments”andverbalinsults(口头侮辱).Butalmosthalfofbullyingvictimsclaimedtheyhadbeenthreatenedandtwoinfivereported“mentalabuse.”Therewasphysicalviolenceinjustunder2%ofcases.

Theunion’sgeneralsecretary,MaryBousted,warnedthatschoolsneededtohavepoliciesinplacetoprotectstafffromworkplacebullying.

“Itisunacceptableforanystafftobebulliedbycolleagues,andschoolsandcollegesneedrobust(稳健的)policiesinplacetopickupanyproblemsanddealwiththemimmediately.Itisnotgoodenoughtojustdealwiththesymptoms(症状);schoolsandcollegesalsoneedtodealwiththecauseofthebullying,”saidMs.Bousted.

ConfuciussuggestedtheGoldenRuleasaprinciplefortheconductoflife:

"Donotdotootherswhatyouwouldnotwantotherstodotoyou."Heassumedthatallmenwereequalatbirth,thoughsomehadmorepotentialthanothers,andthatitwasknowledgethatsetmenapart.Socratesfocusedontheindividual,andthoughtthatthegreatestpurposeofmanwastoseekwisdom.Hebelievedthatsomehadmorepotentialtodeveloptheirreasonthanothersdid.LikeConfucius,hebelievedthatthesuperiorclassshouldruletheinferior(下层的)classes.

ForSocrates,thefamilywasofnoimportance,andthecommunityoflittleconcern.ForConfucius,however,thefamilywasthecenterofthesociety,withfamilyrelationsconsideredmuchmoreimportantthanpoliticalrelations.
