WhenSirWinstonChurchill,thegreatBritishprimeminister,reachedhiseightiethbirthdayinNovember,1954,hewaspresentedwithhisportraitbyawell-knownmodernartist,GrahamSutherland.ThepaintinghadbeenorderedandpaidforbythemembersofParliament,whowantedtohonortheGrandOldManofWorldWarⅡ.
SirWinstonandLadyChurchillweredeeplymovedbythismarkofrespectandaffection.Neitherofthem,ofcourse,allowedthedonorstoseehowmuchtheybothdislikedtheportrait.“Itmakesmelookstupid---whichIamnot!
”protestedChurchillinprivate.Publicly,heonlyremarkedthatitwas“afineexampleofmodernart.”Hisfriendssmiled;itwaswellknownthatSirWinstondidn’tcareformodernart.
Churchillwassounhappyabouttheportraitthatfinallyhiswifehaditdestroyed.ChurchilldiedatninetyinJanuary,1965.LadyChurchillfollowedhimin1977.Shortlyafterherdeath,thepubliclearnedwhathadhappenedtoSutherland’spainting,andaheatedargumentbrokeout.Thepainterwasunderstandablysad.Theartisticcommunity,shockedandangry,claimedthatthedestructionofthepicturehadbeenacrime.Historianssaidthattheyregrettedthedisappearanceofahistoricaldocument.AllagreedthattheChurchillsdidn’thavetherighttodowhattheyhaddone.
