VanGoghwasbornonMarch30,1853atGrootZundertProvinceofNoordNrabantinDutch.Hewasthesonofaclergyman.Hisfirstartistimpressionswereformedasaboy,fromhisunclewhowasanartdealer.Themotivationboreearlyfruitandfromtheageof12theyoungVincentwasdrawing.Theinterestledtoanapprenticeship(学徒)inanartdealer’sfirm,Groupil’s,intheHague.Whenhewasonly20,hewastransferredtothefirm’sLondonoffice.
InLondonVanGoghfacedhisfirstmajorcrisis,whenhewasrejectedinlove.Afterthat,heturnedtoreligion,expresseddisapprovalwithart-dealingandneglectedhiswork.GroupiltransferredhimfromLondontoParisbut,whenhisworkwasstillunsatisfactory,dismissedhimin1876.
TheyoungVanGoghmadereligionaconsuminginterestandduringthenextfewyearstravelledinBritain,BelgiumandHolland,tryingtoestablishhimselfasapreacher(传道人),butwithoutsuccess.

In1886VanGoghleftHollandforeverandtravelledviaAntwerptoParis,andtomajorchangesinartisticstyle.VanGogh’sworkbecamemoreyouthfulinParis.Helivedwithhisbrother,Theo,whomanagedthemoderndepartmentofanartdealer’s.Anew,moreanimated,paintingstyleemergedandtheimpressionisttendenciesofearlierworkweakenedsomewhat.
VanGoghdevelopedatasteforpersonalizedbrushworkandbrilliant,unmixedcolors.Amonghismostprominentexperimentswithcolorwereaseriesofsome30flowerpaintings,afascinationwhichstayedwithhimuntilhisdeath.
