SAMPLEESSAYS

4paragraphmodel:

1.Internationalsportevents

Manypeoplewanttheircountrytohostaninternationalsportingevent.Othersbelievethatinternationalsportingeventsbringmoreproblemsthanbenefits.Discussbothviewsandstateyouropinion.

Thereisfrequentlygreatcompetitiontohostinternationalsportingevents.Noteveryone,however,believesthatthepriceinvolvedinhostingsucheventsisworthwhile.Forme,thisisanunderstandablepointofviewandperhapsnoteverycountryshouldtryandstageinternationalsportingevents.

Themajorargumentagainsthostinginternationalsportingeventsisfinancial.Typically,itcancostseveralmillionpoundstobuildthearenasandmodernisetheinfrastructuresothatitcancaterfortheathletesandthespectators.Thismoney,itisargued,wouldbebetterspentonwelfareandeducationprogrammesthatprovidedirectsupportforthepopulation.Indeed,somegovernmentshaveincurredsomuchdebtthroughhostingtheOlympicGamesthattheyhavehadtoreducespendingonothersocialprogrammes.

Whilethereissomemeritinthatargument,hostingsportingeventsdoesalsobringsignificantbenefits.Firstamongtheseisthehonourandprestigeitbringstothehostcountrybecausethatcountrywillbethecentreofthesportingworldforthedurationoftheevent.Formanypeoplethisisbeyondanyprice.Morethanthat,iftheauthoritiesplancarefully,theycanusetheoccasionofthesportingeventtohelpfinancepublicworksthatbenefitthewholepopulationinthelongterm.Forexample,thevillagefortheathletescanbetransformedintopublichousingandthevariousstadiacanbeusedtobuildasportinglegacyforfuturegenerations.

Myownviewisthatitisanhonourforacountrytohostamajorsportingevent.However,ifagovernmentwishestobidforaninternationaleventtobestagedinitscountry,itshouldensureithassufficientfundstomaintainspendingonotherprojects.

2.Examsandcontinuousassessment

Somepeoplebelievethatexamsareaninappropriatewayofmeasuringstudents’performanceandshouldbereplacedbycontinuousassessment.Doyouagreeordisagreewiththisview?

Thereissomedisputewhetherthebestmethodofassessingstudentsistouseexaminationsorsomeformofcontinuousassessment.Thisisacomplexissueandmybeliefisthatthereisprobablynoonemethodthatappliestoalleducationalsystems.

Therearethreemajorargumentsinfavourofretainingexams.Oneisthattheyprovideaclearandobjectivemeasureofwhatstudentshavelearned,whereasanyformofcontinuousassessmentisprobablygoingtobefarmoresubjective.Anadditionalpointisthattestingtendstobeanexcellentwayofmotivatinglearnerstostudyharderandtorewardthestudentswhodobest.Likewise,examinationstesttheabilityofstudentstoworkunderpressure,andthisisavitallifeskillfortheirlatercareers.

Ontheotherhand,therearestilloccasionswhenitcanbebettertorelievethestudentsofexampressureandtomeasuretheirabilitiesthroughcontinuousassessment.Thisisparticularlythecaseinloweragegroupswhereyoungchildrencanbeaffectednegativelybystressandunder-performinexams.Itcanalsobearguedthatcontinuousassessmentisamoreeffectivewayoftestingsomesubjectssuchasdesignandtechnology,whicharemorecreativeandlessacademic.Afurtherpointisthatoftencontinuousassessmentcanallowteacherstorewardstudentswhoworkhard,butwhomaybelessableandnotdowellinmoreformaltesting.

Inconclusion,whilecontinuousassessmentmaybefairerinsomecontexts,therearestilltimeswhentraditionalexamsmaybemoreappropriate.Apossiblecompromisewouldbetousebothformsoftestingtogether,allowingteacherstorewardbothabilityandhardwork.

3.Computertechnologyandthefuture

Wearebecomingincreasinglydependentoncomputertechnology.Itisusedinbusiness,crimedetectionandeventoflyplanes.Whatwillitbeusedforinfuture?

Isthisdependenceontechnologyagoodthingorshouldwebesuspiciousofitsbenefits?

Aswemoveintothetwenty-firstcentury,itiscleartoseethatwehavebecomemoreandmoredependentoncomputersandinformationtechnology.Thistechnologynowreachesintoalmosteveryareaofourlivesanditiseasytopredictthatthisphenomenonisonlygoingtogrow.Mypersonalbeliefisthatthispresentsavarietyofdangers.

Itishighlylikelythatinthefuturetherewillbecomparativelyfewaspectsofourlivesthatwillnotbeinfluencedbycomputertechnology.Theprobabilityisthatitwillcontrolmoreandmoreformsofcommunication,transformingfieldssuchaseducationandbusinesswhenvideo-conferencingplatformsbecomemorestable.Itmightevenaffectromancewithmorepeopleformingrelationshipsonline.

Whiletheremaybebenefitstothistechnologicalrevolution,therearealsoanumberofpotentialdangers.Perhapsthemostseriousofthesewouldbe thatifpeoplerelyoncomputerstoomuchforcommunication,theycouldinfactbegintocommunicatelesswell.Forexample,ifeverymemberofafamilyhadtheirowncomputerscreenandsmartphone,theymightspeaklessandlessoftentooneanotherandsimplylookatascreen.Thiswouldbeseriousbecauseourabilitytocommunicateisanessentialpartofourhumanity.

Myconclusionisthatthegrowthofcomputertechnologyisinevitable,butthatthismaynotbeentirelypositive.Justoneareainwhichitispossibletoforeseedangersiscommunication,andifwearegoingtoensurethatcomputersdonotbecomeanegativeinfluence,weneedtothinkcarefullyhowweusethem.

4.Culturalglobalisation

Differencesbetweencountriesbecomelessevidenteachyear.Nowadays,allovertheworldpeoplesharethesamefashions,advertising,brands,eatinghabitsandTVchannels.Dotheadvantagesoutweighthedisadvantagesofthis?

Itisundoubtedlythecasethattheworldtodayhasbecomeaglobalvillage.Oneoftheeffectsofthisisthatincreasinglypeopleinallcornersoftheworldareexposedtosimilarservicesandproductsandadoptsimilarhabits.MyviewisthatthisislargelyabeneficialprocessandinthisessayIwillexplainwhy.

Thefirstpointtomakeisthattherearesomedownsidestothisprocessofculturalglobalisation,butthesearerelativelyminor.Themostsignificantofthesedisadvantagesisthatitcanweakennationalcultureandtraditions.Forexample,ifpeoplewatchfilmsandtelevisionprogrammesproducedintheUnitedStates,sometimestheyadoptaspectsofthelifestyleoftheAmericancharacterstheyseeontelevision.Typically,however,thisonlyaffectsminordetailssuchasclothinganddoesnotseriouslythreatennationalidentity.

Whenweturntotheothersideoftheargument,therearetwomajorpointstomakeinfavourofthisprocess.Thefirstoftheseisthatthemorewesharehabits,productsandservices,thebetterweunderstandeachotherandthisreducesprejudiceagainstothernations.Theotherpointrelatestomodernity.Itisasignofprogressinasocietythatpeoplenolongerarerestrictedtobrandsandadvertisementsfromtheirownsocietybutareabletoaccessmoreinternationalgoods.If,forexample,therewereunabletodrinkCocaColaorwearNike,thenthatwouldmeantheirsocietywasnotpartoftheinternationalcommunity.

Inconclusion,Iunderstandthepointofviewofpeoplewhoworryaboutculturalglobalisationbecauseitisathreattonationaltraditions.However,thisisoutweighedbyitspositiveimpactoninternationalunderstandingandthefactthatitrepresentsprogresswithinasociety.

5.Factoryfarms

Inrecentyears,farmingpracticehaschangedtoincludemethodssuchasfactoryfarmingandtheuseoftechnologytoimprovecrops.Somepeoplebelievethesedevelopmentsarenecessary,whileothersregardthemasdangerousandadvocateareturntomoretraditionalfarmingmethods.Discussbothpointsofviewandgiveyourownopinion.

Thereissomecontroversyabouthowfarminghasbeenrevolutionisedinthepastdecades.Whileitispossibletoclaimthattheneteffectofthesechangeshasbeenforthebenefitofmankind,myviewisthatthedisadvantagesoutweightheadvantages.Inthisessay,Ishallexplainmypointofviewbyanalysingbothsidesoftheargument.

Thereareseveralreasonswhytheseinnovationsinagriculturecanbesaidtopositive.Oneisthattheworld’spopulationhasexplodedwithinthepastcenturyandthattraditionalmethodsofagriculturecouldnotprovidesufficientfoodforeveryone.ItcanalsobearguedthatweneedmoreefficientmethodsoffarmingbecausemanycountriesinAsiaandAfricasufferregularfamineanddroughtsandthepeoplewouldstarveifitwasnotforgeneticallymodifiedcropsthataredroughtresistant.Itshouldalsonotbeforgottenthatthequalityoflifeoffarmershasbeenimprovedbytheseadvanceswhicharelesslabourintensive.

Thosewhoargueforareturntosmallerscaleandmoreorganicfarmingbasetheirargumentsontheimpactofagricultureonhealthandtheenvironment.Firstly,itisclaimedthatavarietyofdiseasessuchasBSE,swinefluandbirdfluwerecausedbyconditionsinfactoryfarmsandthatorganicfoodismuchhealthier.Then,thereareconcernsaboutthelackofresearchintohowgeneticallymodifiedcropsmightaffecttheecosystemfortheworse.

Whiletherearestrongargumentsonbothsidesofthecase,mypersonalbeliefisthatthelong-termdangersofthesedevelopmentsmeanthatweshouldbeextremelycautious.Isuggestthatthereshouldbemoreinvestmentintraditionalfarmingmethodstomakethemmoreefficientandthatthereshouldbestrongerlegislationtoensurethat
