TheplansforbuildingtheUndergroundmetwithseveralproblemsanddelays,butthefirsttrackwasfinallyopenedinJanuary1863.Asteamtrainpulledthecarsalongthefirstundergroundtrackwhichwassixkilometers(3.7miles)long.About30,000peoplegotonthesubwaythefirstday.Ridersweretreatedtocomfortableseats(standingupwhilethetrainwasmovingwasnotal-lowed)andpleasantdecorationsinsideeachofthecars.However,thesmokefromtheenginesoonfilledtheairinthetunnelswithashandsoot,aswellaschemicalgases.Fanshadtobeputinthetunnelslatertokeeptheaircleanenoughforpeopletobreathe.Evenwithitsproblems,ridingtheUndergrounddidbecomepopular.Itcarriedninemillionridersinitsfirstyear.
