DuringWorldWarII,RossbeganworkingfortheLockheedAircraftCorporationasamathematician.SheearnedaspecialcertificationinthefieldfromtheUniversityofCaliforniain1949.RosswaslaterchosentojoinLockheed’stop—secretSkunkWorksteamthatworkedonaircraftdesigns.Thenamereferstoagroupthatispermittedtoworkindependentlyonadvancedprojects.Shewastheonlyfemaleengineeramongtheteam’s40members.

Earlyon,sheresearcheddefensesystems.Bythelate1950s,herworkcenteredonsatellitesandaseriesofspacerocketscalledAgenda.Therocketswereextremelyimportantinthe1960sduringtheApollomoonprogram.
