Xwasasecretagent.Hehadrentedafurnishedroominaprovincialtownnotfarfromthepublicparkandhadbeentheretwoweeks.Hewasstandingatthewindowlookingoutatthedullbedsofgeraniums,theparkgatesandthecold,uninvitingstatueofQueenVictoriathatstoodacrossthestreetfromhim.Itwasraininghardandthefewpeoplewhopassedbylookedwetandmiserable.Xwasmiserable,too.How,hewondered,couldanybodythinktherewasanythinginterestingaboutthelifeofasecretagentHeknewitwasbecausepeoplehadseensomanytelevisionplaysaboutglamorousspiesthattheythoughtthelifeofasecretagentwasexciting.Theywereconvincedthateverycigarettelighterconcealedasecrettaperecorder;thatafountainpenheldinacertainwaywouldopenalockeddoor,thatthetouchofagoldringagainstthehandofanenemywouldmakehimrevealallhissecrets.Howwrongtheywere!

Helookedroundhisroom.Thewallpaperwasintheworstpossibletaste,thepictureshorrible,thecarpetworn,dirtyandfaded;andhewascold.ThiswasthethirdMondayhehadcometothewindowtolookout.Heprayeditwouldbethelast.

Asifinanswertohisprayer,acertainmeetinghehadbeensenttoinvestigatewasabouttotakeplace.Hetookouthiscamera.Justbeneaththestatuetwowomenhadstoppedtospeak.Heknewoneofthem,anditwasshewhopointedinhisdirection.Theotherwomanlookeduptowardshimandinthatbriefmomenthephotographedher.
