THENIGHTINGALEANDTHEROSE

  "ShesaidthatshewoulddancewithmeifIbroughtherredroses,"criedtheyoungStudent,"butinallmygardenthereisnoredrose."

  FromhernestintheoaktreetheNightingaleheardhim,andshelookedoutthroughtheleavesandwondered.

  "Noredroseinallmygarden!

"hecried,andhisbeautifuleyesfilledwithtears."Ah,onwhatlittlethingsdoeshappinessdepend!

Ihavereadallthatthewisemenhavewritten,andallthesecretsofphilosophyaremine,yetforwant(没有)ofaredroseismylifemadewretched."

  Suddenlyshespreadherbrownwingsforflight,andsoaredintotheair.Shepassedthroughthegrovelikeashadowandlikeashadowshesailedacrossthegarden.

  "Givemearedrose,"shecried,"andIwillsingyoumysweetestsong."

  ButtheTreeshookitshead.

  "Myrosesarered,"itanswered,"asredasthefeetofthedove,andredderthanthegreatfansofcoralthatwaveandwaveintheocean-cavern.Butthewinterhaschilledmyveins,andthefrosthasnipped(摧残)mybuds,andthestormhasbrokenmybranches,andIshallhavenorosesatallthisyear."

  "OneredroseisallIwant,"criedtheNightingale,"onlyoneredrose!
