“不患无位，患所以立。

“能以礼让为国乎？

何有？

不能以礼让为国乎，如礼何？

“居上不宽，为礼不敬，临丧不哀，吾何以观之哉？

Confuciussaid，“Whatisthereformetoobserveofamanifheisnotbroad-mindedwhenheisinhighposition,notreverentwhenheisperformingtherites,andnotsadwhenheisinmourning?

“君子博学于文，约之于礼，亦可以弗畔矣夫。

Confuciussaid，“AgentlemanwhostudiestheclassicsextensivelyandrestrainshimselfwiththeriteswillnotdepartfromtheWay.”

“弟子入则孝，出则弟”

Confuciussaid，“Youngpeopleshouldbefilialtotheirparentsathomeandrespectfultotheirbrotherswhentheyarewiththem.”

”谨而信，泛爱众，而亲仁。

行有余力，则以学文。

“岁寒，然后知松柏之后凋也。

“君子喻于义，小人喻于利。

“君子周而不比，小人比而不周。

Confuciussaid，“Thegentlemanunitesanddoesnotplotwithothers;

themeanmanplotsanddoesnotunitewithothers.”

“君子和而不同，小人同而不和。

Confuciussaid，“Thegentlemanaimsatharmony,andnotatuniformity.Themeanmanaimsatuniformity,andnotatharmony.”

“德之不修，学之不讲。

闻义不能徒，不善不能改，是吾忧也。

Confuciussaid，“Neglectofmoralcultivation,neglectoflearningandpracticingwhathasbeenlearned,failuretofollowwhatisright,andfailuretocorrectwhatiswrong—thesearemyworries.”

“益有三乐，损有三乐。

Confuciussaid，“Threekindsofpleasurearebeneficial,andthreekindspleasureareharmful.“

乐节礼乐，乐道人之善，乐多贤友，益矣。

”Thepleasureofbeingregulatedbytheritesandmusic,thepleasureofpraisingothermen’sgoodness,andthepleasureofhavingmanyvirtuousfriendsarebeneficial.“

乐骄乐，乐佚游，乐宴乐，损矣。

Thepleasureofbeingconceited,thepleasureofunrestrainedwanderings,andthepleasureofindulgingineatinganddrinkingareharmful.”

“见贤思齐焉，见不贤而内自省也。

Confuciussaid，“Whenoneseesavirtuousman,oneshouldthinkofexertingoneselftobelikehim;

whenoneseessomeonewhoisnotvirtuous,oneshouldexamineonself.”

“学而时习之，不亦说乎？

TheMastersaid,Tolearnandatduetimestorepeatwhatonehaslearnt,isthatnotafterallapleasure?

有朋自远方来，不亦乐乎？

Thatfriendsshouldcometoonefromafar,isthisnotafteralldelightful?

人不知而不愠，不亦君子乎？

Toremainunsouredeventhoughone’smeritsareunrecognizedbyothers,isthatnotafterallwhatisexpectedofagentleman?

曾子曰：

“吾日三省吾身：

MasterTsengsaid,EverydayIexaminemyselfonthesethreepoints:

为人谋而不忠乎？

inactingonbehalfofothers,haveIalwaysbeenloyaltotheirinterests?

与朋友交而不信乎？

Inintercoursewithmyfriends,haveIalwaysbeentruetomyword?

传不习乎？

HaveIfailedtorepeatthepreceptsthathavebeenhandeddowntome?

有子曰：

“礼之用，和为贵。

先王之道，斯为美，小大由之。

MasterYusaid,Intheusagesofritualitisharmonythatisprized;

theWayoftheFormerKingsfromthisgotitsbeauty.Bothsmallmattersandgreatdependuponit.

有所不行，知和而和，不以礼节之，亦不可行也。

Ifthingsgoamiss,hewhoknowstheharmonywillbeabletoattunethem.Butifharmonyitselfisnotmodulatedbyritual,thingswillstillgoamiss.

“吾十有五而志于学，三十而立，四十而不惑，

TheMastersaid,"

AtfifteenIsetmyheartuponlearning.Atthirty,Ihadplantedmyfeetfirmupontheground.Atforty,Inolongersufferedfromperplexities.

五十而知天命，六十而耳顺，

Atfifty,IknewwhatwerethebiddingsofHeaven.Atsixty,Iheardthemwithdocileear.

七十而从心所欲，不逾矩。

Atseventy,Icouldfollowthedictatesofmyownheart;

forwhatIdesirednolongeroversteppedtheboundariesofright.”

“其身正，不令而行；

其身不正，虽令不从。

TheMastersaid,“Iftherulerhimselfisuprightallwillgowelleventhoughhedoesnotgiveorders.Butifhehimselfisnotupright,eventhoughhegivesorders,theywillnotbeobeyed.”

“三人行，必有我师焉。

TheMastersaid,“EvenwhenwalkinginapartyofnomorethanthreeIcanalwaysbecertainoflearningfromthoseIamwith.

择其善者而从之，其不善者而改之。

TherewillbegoodqualitiesthatIcanselectforimitationandbadonesthatwillteachmewhatrequirescorrectioninmyself.”

“出门如见大宾，

Confuciussaid，"

Whenyougooutofyourhome,behaveasisyouweremeetingimportantguests;

"

使民如承大祭。

whenyouareusingthecommonpeople’slabor,behaveasifyouwereconductingasolemnsacrificialceremony.

己所不欲，勿施于人。

在邦无怨，在家无怨。

Donotimposeonotherswhatyoudonotdesireyourself.Bearnogrudgeagainstthestatewhereyouwork;

havenofeelingofdissatisfactionwhenyoustayathome.”

“刚、毅、木、讷近仁。

Confuciussaid，“Beingfirm,resolute,simpleandreticentisclosetobeinghumane.”

“唯仁者能好人，能恶人。

Confuciussaid，“Onlythehumanecanloveothersandhateothers.”

“君子坦荡荡，小人长戚戚。

Confuciussaid，“Thegentlemanisopenandatease;

themeanmanisfullofworriesandanxieties.”

“无欲速，无见小利。

欲速则不达，见小利则大事不成。

Confuciussaid，“Donotwanttodothingsquickly,anddonotseekpettygains.Youcannotreachyourgoalifyouwanttobequick,andyoucannotaccomplishgreatthingsifyouseekpettygains.”

“有教无类。

Confuciussaid，“Thereshouldbeeducationforeveryonewithoutdistinction.”

“性相近也，习相远也。

Confuciussaid，“Bynaturemenaresimilartooneanother,butlearningandpracticemakethemdifferent.”

“学而不思则罔，思而不学则殆。

Confuciussaid，“Hewholearnswithoutthinkingwillbebewildered;

hewhothinkswithoutlearningwillbeindanger.”

“温故而知新，可以为师矣。

Confuciussaid，“Hecanbeateacherwhofindswhatisnewinreviewingwhatisold.”

“三军可夺帅也，匹夫不可夺志。

Confuciussaid，“Anyarmymaybedeprivedofitscommandingofficer,yetamancannotbedeprivedofhiswill.”

“由，诲女知之乎？

知之为知之，不知为不知，是知也。

Confuciussaid，“You,shallIteachyouwhatitistoknow?

Youknowsomethingifyouknowit,andyoudonotknowsomethingifyoudonot.Thatiswhattoknowmeans.”

“君子讷于言而敏于行。

Confuciussaid，“Thegentlemanwishestobeslowinspeechbutquickinaction.”

“君子耻其言而过其行。

Confuciussaid，“Thegentlemanconsidersitashametotalkmorethanhedoes.”

“君子不以言举人，不以人废言。

Confuciussaid，“Thegentlemandoesnotrecommendamanbecauseofwhathesays,nordoesheignorewhatamansaysbecauseofhispersonality.”

“默而识之，学而不厌，诲人不倦，何有于我哉？

Confuciussaid，“Tocommitknowledgetomemoryquietly,tostudytirelessly,andtoenlightenothersindefatigably—thesearenotdifficultforme.”

“见义不为，无勇也。

Confuciussaid，“Itiscowardicenottodaretodefendrighteousnesswhenitisendangered.”

“贤哉回也！

TheMastersaid,incomparableindeedwasHui!

一箪食，一瓢饮，在陋巷

Ahandfulofricetoeat,agourdfulofwatertodrink,livinginameanstreet.

人不堪其忧，回也不改其乐。

贤哉回也！

Otherswouldhavefounditunendurablydepressing,buttoHui’scheerfulnessitmadenodifferenceatall.IncomparableindeedwasHui!

子曰；

”巧言令色，鲜矣也。

TheMasersaid,“findwordsandinsinuatingappearanceareseldomassociatedwithtruevirtue."

”逝者如斯夫，不舍昼夜。

TheMasersaid,“Itpassesonjustlikethis,notceasingdayornight!

非礼勿视，非礼勿听，非礼勿言，非礼勿动。

Looknotatwhatiscontrarytopropriety;

listennottowhatiscontrarytopropriety;

speaknotwhatiscontrarytopropriety;

makenomovementwhichiscontrarytopropriety.

唯女子与小人，为难养也。

近之则不孙，远之则怨。

Ofallpeople,girlsandservantsarethemostdifficulttobehaveto.Ifyouarefamiliarwiththem,theylosetheirhumility.Ifyoumaintainareservetowardsthem,theyarediscontented.

关睢乐而不淫，哀而不伤。

TheKwanTsuisexpressiveofenjoymentwithoutbeinglicentious,andofgriefwithoutbeinghurtfullyexcessive.

诗三百，一言以蔽之，曰：

思无邪。

IntheBookofPoetryarethreehundredpieces,butthedesignofthemallmaybeembracedinonesentence--"

Havingnodepravedthoughts."

不患人之不己知，患不知人也。

Iwillnotbeafflictedatmen'

snotknowingme;

IwillbeafflictedthatIdonotknowmen.
