Luckily,researchersattheUniversityofTechnology(UT)inLima,Peruheardabouttheirproblemandfoundawonderfulsolution.Theymadealampthatcanbepoweredbyplantsandsoil,bothofwhichcanbeeasilyfoundintheAmazonianrainforestwherethevillagelies.ThelamptakesenergyfromaplantgrowinginawoodenboxandusesittolightupanLEDlightbulb.

Whilethatmaysoundamazingandevenimpossible,thesciencebehindtheideaisquitesimple.Asplantscreatetheirfood(usingthesun'senergy,waterandchemicalsfromthesoil),theyalsoproduceelectrons—thebuildingblocksofelectricalenergy.TheUTteamputspecialsticksinsidethesoiltocapturetheenergyandkeepitinthelamp'sbatteriesforlateruse.Theresearcherssayasinglechargecanpowera50­wattLEDlightfortwohours—enoughtimeforlocalvillagerstogettheireveningworkdone.
