“Workingwithleadingresearchersandacademics,andusingcutting-edgeMRIbraintechnology,weexaminedhowplacesaffectpeople,howtheybecomespecial,andwhywefeelapulltowardsthem,”explainedNinoStrachey,headofresearchfortheNationalTrust.

The20volunteerswereshownimagesoflandscapes,houses,andotherlocations,aswellaspersonallymeaningfulobjects.Measuringtheirbrainactivity,theresearchersfoundthatitwastheplaces,asopposedtotheobjects,thatcausedthebraintogetthemostexcited.

Volunteerswerealsointerviewedatgreatlengthtwotimes,onceathomeandtheothertimeattheirspecialplace.Theresearchmadediscoveriesthathadneverknownbefore—thefavoriteplacesawokefeelingsofbelonging,physicalandemotionalsafety,andanintenseinternalpulltotheplace.

Dr.AndyMyersweighedinontheresearch,saying,“Forthefirsttimewehavebeenabletoprovethephysicalandemotionalbenefitsofplaces,farbeyondanyresearchthathasbeendonebefore.”
