"Aboutone-thirdoftheWestAntarcticicesheetisthinning,"saysDr.Vaughan,"unaveragebyabout10cmperyear,butintheworstplacesby3~4mperyear."
TherockonwhichtheWestAntarcticicerestsisbelowsealevel,andBritishAntarcticSurveyresearchersbelievethethinningcouldbeduetotheicesheetmeltingonitsunderside.
"Itmaybethattheoceaniswarmingendthat'scausingtheicetomelt,buttheremaybeotherreasonsaswell;forexample,there'slotsofvolcanisminthatareaandsothatcouldchangehowmuchheatisdeliveredtotheundersideoftheicesheet."
CryosatshouldhelptopindownwhatishappeningattheWestAntarcticfringe.TheradaraltimetersonboarditspredecessorsERS1andERS2havebeenunabletomapthesteepslopesatthecoast,whereasCryosat'sinstrumentshouldbeabletocope.

InSeptember,welearnedfromscientistsattheU.S.NationalSnowandIceDataCenterthattheextentofoceancoveredbyiceisgettingsmallereachyear,thecurrentrateofshrinkagetheycalculateataround8%perdecade.Theirprojectionisthatwithinabout60years,therewillbenosummericeatallontheArcticOcean.
"Overall,theextenthasbeendeclining,withsomeoscillations(摆动),sincethe1970swhensatelliteswereabletomapit,"commentsPeterWadhams,ProfessorofOceanPhysicsatCambridgeUniversity,U.K,andcurrentlyattheLaboratoireOceanographiqueinVillefranche-sur-mer,France."There'sbeenaslowdecline,butnowthethinningappearstobemorerapid.Inthelasttwodecades,notonlyhastheareashrunkbuttheicehasgotthinnerbyabout400;thepredictionisthatitwillvanishaltogetherduringsummersinthesecondhalfofthiscentury."

Thisdatadeficithasledtoarivaltheory--thattheiceisnotmeltingatall;itissimplypilingupinanotherpartoftheocean,perhapsalongthenorthCanadiancoast.
PeterWadhamsbelieveshehasnowdisprovedthisidea."Wedidanexperimentwhereweinstalledasetofbuoys(浮标)inthatregionwhichmeasurethethicknessoftheiceandtransmititbackviasatellite,"hesays."Thebuoysitsontheice,anduswavespassunderittheymakeitriseandfall,justbyamillimeterortwo;measuringthisallowsyoutocalculatethethicknessoftheice."
Thepreliminaryresults,announcedatascientificmeetinginApril2005,showthattheextraiceisnotthere;itreallyhasmeltedaway.
