TheDualPersonalitiesoftheProtagonistsinWutheringHeights

Abstract:

WutheringHeightsistheFlowerofEnglishliterature;itisaromanticworkwhichdescribesathrillinglovestory.Itstartedfromthewildnessandendedasatragedy,inwhichweseethelonglastingrevengeandhatredbetweenthetwofamilies.Itdemonstratestheseamysideofthesociety.Thisnovelbuilttwoverycomplexprotagonistsbecauseoftheirdualpersonalities.Inordertomakethereadershaveabetterunderstandingofthisnovel,thisthesisanalyzesthemaincharacters,i.e.HeathcliffandCatherine,throughtheirgrowingbackground,theirbehaviors,theirlanguage,andtheirinnerworldsdescribedinthenovelwrittenbyEmilyBronte.Fromthedetailedanalysis,wecanunderstandatruthaboutthisnovelmoreclearly,thatis,societyshapedthepeople’scharacterandtheircharacterdeterminedtheirdestiny.

摘要:

《呼啸山庄》是英国文学史上的一朵奇葩。

它是一部描写惊心动魄爱情故事的浪漫主义文学作品。

小说以荒原开始,以悲剧收场,在这期间我们不仅可以看到持续了半个多世纪的仇恨与报复,还可以理解到当时社会的阴暗面。

这部小说的主要人物,以及他们的双重性格,都反映了环境对人物性格的影响,同时他们的爱情悲剧反映了人物性格决定了人物的命运。

本文主要通过主人公成长的生活环境、行为、语言以及内心世界分析了其主要性格特征,以及该性格特征对其爱情悲剧的影响。

1.Introduction

WutheringHeightsistheFlowerofEnglishliterature;itisaromanticworkwhichdescribesathrillinglovestory.Thestorystartedfromthewildnessandendedasatragedy,inwhichweseethelonglastingrevengeandhatredbetweenthetwofamilies.Itdemonstratestheseamysideofthesociety.Themaincharacters,theirdualpersonalitiesandtheirlovetragedyinthisnovelshowusthatthesocialenvironmentshapesthecharacterofthepeople,andthecharacterleadstothepeople’sdestiny.Theprotagonistsinthisnovelhavebeenextensivelystudiedinrecentyearsbyeasternandwesternscholars.Butmostoftheirarticlesaresoprofessional,tosomedegree,thattherearesomedifficultiesforgeneralreaderstounderstand.Infact,lotsofobviousdescriptionstheauthorhasgivenarethemostpowerfulevidencetotheprotagonists’uniquecharacters.ThisthesisfocusesonthedualpersonalitiesofHeathclifandCatherine,andanalyzestheformationoftheirdualpersonalitiesandtheinfluenceontheirlovetragedythroughtheirgrowingbackground,theirbehaviors,theirlanguage,andtheirinnerworlddescribedinthenovel.ThisthesisbeginswiththebriefintroductionaboutWutheringHeights,andthencitessomewonderfuldepictionsinthenoveltosupporttheanalysisofthemaincharacters’dualpersonalitiesandtheanalysisoftheirlovetragedy.

2.ThebriefintroductionaboutWutheringHeights

“‘Wuthering’isasignificantprovincialadjective,descriptiveoftheatmospherictumulttowhichitsstationisexposedinstormyweather.”(Bronte,2009:

2)Andthisindicatesatragicstory.

“WutheringHeights”isthenameofagrangeinamountainousarea.Oneday,itsoldownerMr.Earnshawbringshomeagipsyfoundlingtomeethissurprisedfamily.Mr.Earnshawtreatsthechild,Heathcliff,ashisownson.Hisowndaughter,Catherine,changesherinitialattitudeofridiculeandbefriendsthe“brother”,buthisson,Hindley,makesapointofseeingtheintruderasoneoftheservantsofthehouse.Nelly,thenurse,isunhappybutkindtowardthepoorboy.Yearspass,andOldMr.Earnshawdies.CatherinefallsinlovewithHeathcliff,butagreeseventuallytomarryyoungEdgarLintonofanotherfarm,ThorncrossGrange.BecauseofsomemistakesofCatherine,Heathcliffdisappears.Afewyearslater,heresurfaces,goestoseeCatherine,andrevivesheroldflameforhim,buthetormentsherruthlessly,takingadvantageofEdgar’ssisterIsabella’sinnocentloveforhim,elopingwithherandeventuallydesertingher.Inthemeantime,hestayswithHindleyatWutheringHeights,trickshis“brother”intogambling,andencourageshimtoslidetoalcoholism.SoonHindleyloseshisfarmouttoHathcliffanddiesmiserably,leavinghisson,youngHareton,behind.TheemotionalupheavalthatCatherineisputthroughprovestoomuchforherweaknerves.Itcausestheimmaturebirthofherdaughter,Cathy,andsendshertoherearlygrave.Isabellaendsupgivingbirthtoaweakson,Linton,sendshimbacktoherbrother,anddies.Heathcliffsendshismanovertoclaimhisson,LittleLinton,andtakehimbacktoWutheringHeights.Overtenyearspass,andtheyoungergenerationgrowsup.HeathcliffthenluresCathyoverandforceshertomarryhisinvalidson.HerfatherEdgardiesinmisery,thenLintondiessoon,andHeathecliffnowownsthetwoproperties.HebrutalizesHaretonandCathy.Buthesuffersfromhispsychicwoundimmensely.HeoftencriesoutatnightforhislongdeadCatherine,hasvisionsofCatherineclutchingathiswindows,andonewindyrainynighthedecidesthatitistimetogiveupanddie.YoungCathyandHaretonuniteintheend.

“Generally,thisisastoryofrevenge.Infact,itrevealsfullytherebellionandtheabundantemotionoftheauthor.”(Hou,2005:

337)Andthepowerofthenovelcomesfirstandforemostfromthepsychiccomplexitiesofthetwomajorcharacters,CatherineandHeathcliff.

3.Heathcliff’sdualpersonalities

HeathcliffisoneofthemostcomplexheroesintheEnglishnovels,andmostreaderswasattractedbythisperson,especiallybyhisroaringpassionofloveandhissharpcontractionbetweenloveandhate,andhisruthlesswaysofrevenge.

3.1Hisextremehatred

Astheproductofenvironment,thefateofHeathcliffisdoomed.Inotherwords,theenvironmentmakesHeathcliff’scharacter,andhischaracterbringshisownfate.

HeathcliffisafoundlinginthestreetofLiverpoor.Becauseofthishedoesn’tliketalkingtoomuch,evenheistakentoMr.Ernshaw’sfamily.Thismakeshimseemsullenandpatient.Afterhisbenefactordies,HendleybecomestheownerofWutheringHeights,andthenewownertreatshimlikeadog,anddriveshimfromhiscompanytotheservants,depriveshimoftheinstructionsofthecurate.Inordertorebelagainstthe“tyrant”,Heathcliffbecomesthesocalledpagan,whopromisesfairtogrowupasrudeassavages.What’sworse,Catherine,hisonlycompanion,decidestomarryEdgar,thehandsomeandrichownerofThorncrossGrange.Thentherevengefulfirebeginstodevourinitsflameswhoeverstandsbetweenhimandhisbeloved.Whenhedecidestoberevengedonthepeoplewhotakethemisfortunetohim,healsodecidesthathewouldgainhistragicfate.

Heathcliff’smadrevengeseemstobeagainstthelogic,butitshowshisrebelliousspiritmostincisively.Thisisaspecialrebelliousspiritshapedinaspecialenvironment.IfHendleyhadn’tdeprivedHeathcliffofhiseducationalright,andhadn’ttreatedhimsobadly,hewouldnothavebecomeabadman;IfCatherinehadn’tchosentomarryEdgar,Heathcliffwouldnothavebecomeaterribleman.

Heathclifflivesinasocietywhichmoneydominateseverything,andpovertyisshameful.Becauseofpoverty,Heathcliffloseseverythingincludinghisbelovedperson,evenhisdignity.Therefore,afterallthesufferings,heswearstogeteverythingthatbelongstohim.Inthecapitalsociety,themostpowerfulthingismoney;therefore,Heathcliffchoosestooccupyalltheprosperitywhichhisenemieshavepossessedinsteadofkillingthemdirectly.

Inaword,Heathcliff’sextremehatredisshapedbythepeopleandthesocialenvironmentstepbystep.

3.2Hisprofoundlove

AfterOldErnshaw’sdeath,CatherineistheonlyonewhotreatsHeathcliffwell.Shecaresforhimwithallherheart,andshealwaysaccompanieshim,nomatterwhathappened,evenifherbrothertreatsHeathcliffasadirtydog.Heathclifflovesthislady,theonlyonewhodoesn’tmindhislowlyidentitywithallherheartandsoul.Thoughhesufferslotsofunimaginabledistress,hisloveforCatherinehasneverstopped.WhenhehearsthatCatherinewoulddebaseherselfifmarryinghim,hisheartbreakingintopieces.Desperateasheis,heleavesaloneandmakesuphismindsnottomeetCatherineagain.Yearsbyyears,however,hebeginstorealizethattheroominhisheartisonlyforCatherine.HemakeshimselfrichandhopefulenoughtoreturntoreclaimhislostCatherine.Whenherealizesthatit’simpossibleforhimandCatherinetoreturntothepast.Hedespairsonceagain.Heuseseverymeanstodestroyhisenemies,andeveninnocentpersonsareinvolvedinhisrevenge,suchasIsabella.AllthethingshehasdoneseemjustforCatherine.HadCatherinemarriedHeathcliffatthebeginning,Hethcliff’sevil,violent,anddevastatingrevengewouldneverhaveoccurred,peoplewouldnothavedied,andlifewouldhavebeendifferentandmovedonforall.

ChapterXVdescribesthepatheticsceneofthefinalmeetingbetweenHeathcliffandCathyjustbeforethelatter’sdeath.HeathcliffcoversCathywhoisatthelastgaspwithfranticcaresses,saidsadly—“Youteachmenowhowcruelyou’vebeen—cruelandfalse.Whydidyoudespiseme?
