InHemingway’sworks,thereexistcertaincommonfeaturesamongtheprotagonists.Thesecharactersshareidenticalpersonalitiesandlifeexperiencesandtheybearsimilarattentiontowardssociety.Theirwayoflifecanbedefinedbythewayinwhichtheyrespondedtoconflictsaswellasthewayinwhichtheyaredepicted.Weusetheterm“codehero”indescriptionofHemingway’scharacters.SuchaconceptseemstohavecreatedtheillusionthatHemingway’sheroesallbehaveinaccordancewithcertainprinciples,orthatsomecoderulestheirbehavior,andthatcertainprinciplesdominatetheirinnerconflictsandcontroltheirlifeorientation.The"Codehero"hasbeeninterpretedascourageousandstubborn."Codehero"isnotaconceptconcernedwithindividuals,butwithgroups.Theessenceof"Codehero"isapessimisticworldoutlookandanaestheticfaithinlife.Hemingway'sfourimportantnovels,AFarewelltoArms,TheSunAlsoRises,ForWhomtheBellsTollsandTheOldManandtheSea,canberegardedasaquartetofcodeheroes.Throughthefourheroes'lifeexperiencesandtheirpursuitofvalues,thisquartetdemonstratestheprocessofthedevelopmentofthe"codehero",andthusrepresentsthecourseoftheconstructionoftheworldoutlook.The“code”,sometimescalled“graceunderpressure”,isanidealsetofbeliefandattitudes,essentiallyamodeofself-regard,whichenablestheheroestofunctioninahostile,destructiveenvironment.Accordingtothiscode,amanisdefinedbywill,pride,andendurance:

theabilitytoacceptpain,evenloss,whenlosscannotbeavoided.Theprideofknowingthatonehasdoneone’sbest,withthecouragetoacttrulytoone’snature;andthewilltofacedefeatorvictorywithoutcomplaintononehandorboastingontheother.Theword“hero”canmeanboth“hero”and“protagonist”inEnglish.Intheliteraryworksthetwoconcepts“hero”and“protagonist”arebothcloselyrelatedanddistinctive.Talkingofhero,wehavetotracebacktoitsoriginalmeaningandconnotationintheancientGreekcivilization.Amancanbeaherobecauseofunusualbravery,nobilityofaction,moralandintellectualqualities.LikePrometheus,Odysseus,JuliaCaesar,Napoleon,agreatnumberoffiguresareesteemedandrespectedasmodelsforheroesbecausetheyrepresentthecollectivedesireandyearningforsublimity,andgrandeur.Sotheherocarriesitstraditionalmeaningandservesasaprototypeforinstruction,educationandimitation.However,fromthelate19thcentury,owingtothesocial,politicalandculturalchanges,theherointhecontemporaryworldbearsdifferentmeanings.Hemingway’sheroesmakeabreakthroughintheconnotationandtranscendthetraditionalfunctionofheroes.ManyofthecharactersinHemingway’snovelsandstoriesarecalledheroesbecausetheystillpreservesomeofthevirtuesoftheromanticizedfiguresandthenoblepeopleinthetraditionalsense–bravery,courage,faith,perseverance,dignity,etc.Meanwhile,fromtheirexternalactionandinternalmind,therealwayspermeatesapessimisticmoodandovertone.Theseheroesaremorehumanthandivine,morecomplexthansimplex.ThevirtuesHemingway’sheroesshowwhenfacingtheharshrealityservenotasmodelsforpeopletofollowbutpurelyastherevelationoftheconsolationandcomfortforthebitteragonyandpains.Hemingway’sheroesarenotalwaysstrong-minded,tough,sturdy,butratherdualized.Theircourage,faithandmoralcodearerootedinthefirmpresumptionthat“Manproposes,Goddispose”.Nobodycanachieveultimatesuccesswhenconfrontingthedecidedfate.SoHemingway’sheroes,unlikethosetobeworshippedandhonored,alwaysshowtheweaknessofhumanbeings–cowardice,resignation,vanityandsoon.Thereasonwhytheyareentitled“heroes”restsnotwiththeirawarenessoftheemptinessoftheworld,butwiththeirconsequentattitudetowardthemeaninglesslife.Theydisplaytheoutstandingqualityinspiteofthedoo
