Theyhelpedtostartalittleschoolthatsatonapieceoflanddirectlyacrosstheroadfromtheirfarm.Thatschoolservedthefamilieswhohadsetupfarminginthatarea.ThechildrengatheredeverydaysothattheycouldstayinthatoneroomschoolhouseandtheylearnedEnglishandArithmeticandAmericanHistory.ThosechildrencamefromhomeswhereNorwegianwasspoken,butmanyofthemwerebornintheUnitedStates,andtheywereAmericansnowandtheylearnedtheEnglishlanguage.

MygrandparentsneverlearnedmuchEnglish,andneitherdidmostoftheirgenerationofNorwegiansettlers.But,allofthemwantedtheirchildrentolearnabouttheirnewhomelandandtospeaktheAmericanlanguage.ItwasallpartofthedreamtheyhadfortheirfamiliesandthechildrentheyhopedtoraiseinAmerica.

MymotherandherbrothersandsisterslearnedaboutNorwayfromtheirparents,andtheyatealloftheNorwegianfavouritesthatmygrandmotherandtheotherwomenwouldcook.AsachildIremembervisitingEvergreenFarm,havingfondmemoriesofthebigwhitefarmhousesurroundedbyevergreentreestothebackandlilachedgesinthefront.
