(书外文章)Televisionwasnotinventedbyanyoneperson.Nordiditspringintobeingovernight.Itdevelopedgradually,overalongperiod,fromtheideasofmanypeople-eachonebuildingontheworkoftheirpredecessors’.Theprocessbeganin1873,whenitwasaccidentallydiscoveredthattheelectricalresistanceoftheelementselenium(硒)variedinproportiontotheintensityofthelightshiningonit.Scientistsquicklyrecognizedthatthisprovidedawayoftransforminglightvariationsintoelectricalsignals.Almostimmediatelyanumberofschemeswereproposedforsendingpicturesbywire(itwas,ofcourse,beforeradio).

Oneoftheearliestoftheseschemeswaspatternedonthehumaneye.SuggestedbyG.R.Careyin1875.Itenvisioned(想像,展望)amosaic(感光嵌镶幕)ofseleniumcellsonwhichthepicturetobetransmittedwouldbefocusedbyalenssystem.Atthereceivingendtherewouldbeasimilarlyarrangedmosaicmadeupofelectriclights.Eachseleniumcellwouldbeconnectedbyanindividualwiretothesimilarlyplacedlightinthereceivingmosaic.Lightfallingontheseleniumcellwouldcausetheassociatedelectriclighttoshineinproportion.Thusthemosaicoflightswouldreproducetheoriginalpictures,Hadthenecessaryamplifiers(放大器)andtherightkindoflightsbeenavailablethissystemwouldhaveworked.Butitalsowouldhaverequiredanimpracticalnumberofconnectingwires.Careyrecognizedthisandinasecondschemeproposedto“scan”thecells-transmittingthesignalfromeachcelltoitsassociatedlight,inturn,overasinglewire.Ifthisweredonefastenoughtheretainingpoweroftheeyewouldcausetheresultantimagetobeseenasacompletepicture.
