ItisastoryofworseenvironmentandthechanginglivesoftheThaisthemselves.AccordingtoRichardLair,Thailand’sexpertontheAsianelephantandauthorofthereportGoneAstray,attheturnofthelastcentury,theremaywellhavebeenasmanyas100,000nationalelephantsinthecountry.

InthenorthofThailandalone,itwasestimated(估计)thatmorethan20,000elephantswereemployedintransport,1,000ofthemaloneontheroadbetweenthecitiesofChiangMaiandChiangSaen. 

Thiswasatatimewhen90percentofThailandwasstillforest—ahabitatthatnotonlysupportedtheanimalsbutalsomadethemnecessarytocarrygoodsandpeople.Nothingploughsthroughthickforestbetterthanlotsofsure-footedelephants.

By1950theelephantpopulationhaddropped,butstilltothenumberof13,397.However,todaythereareprobablynomorethan3,800,withanother1,350wanderingfreeinthenationalparks.Butnow,Thailand’sforestcoversonly20percentoftheland.Thisdeforestation(采伐森林)isthecentralpointoftheelephant’sdifficultsituation,forithaseffectivelyputtheanimalsoutofwork.Thiscentury,astheroadnetworkgrew,theelephant’sroleasabeastofburdendecreased.
