In1853,ayoungtailorfromGermany,calledLeviStrauss,beganworkinginSanFrancisco;Levisoldthickcanvas(帆布)tominers;theminersusedthecanvastomaketents.

Oneday,aminertoldLevithathecouldnotfindtrousersthatwerestrongenoughforworkinthegoldmines.Levidecidedtomakesometrousersoutofcanvas.Verysoon,hesoldallthecanvastrousershehadmade!

Theywerejustwhatminerswanted.

However,thecanvaswasratherheavyandstiff(坚硬的).Levithereforebegantolookforadifferenttextile(织物).SoonhefoundaheavytextilefromFrance;itwasdenim(斜纹粗棉布).Denimwasabitlighterthancanvas,butiswasverystrong.Itwasidealforminers.

Researchershavemetcomplex“giantviruses”inthemeltingpermafrost(永久冻土)ofSiberia.Onesuchvirus,30,000yearsold,wasstillinfectiouswhenitwasdiscoveredin2015,thoughitposednodangertohumans.Itturnsoutthatpermafrostisexcellentatpreservingbacteriaandvirusesthataretemporarilyinactive,andthenbecomereactivatedwithwarming.

ScientistshavediscoveredSpanishfluvirusesindeadbodiesburiedin1918intheAlaskantundra(冻原).WhenclosetohalfofthepopulationofaSiberiantowninthe1890sdiedofsmallpox(天花),theirbodieswereburiedinthepermafrostalongtheKolymaRiver.Thebanksofthatriverarenowbeginningtowearawayamidglobalwarming,theBBCreports.

InSiberiainAugust2016,some100peopleand2,300deerwereinfectedwithanthrax(炭疽)inthefirstoutbreakintheareasince1941.Oneboydiedfromthedisease.Scientistbelievedtheanthraxhadbeentrappedinthebodyofalong-frozendeaddeerandbecameactiveduringparticularlyhotsummerof2016,releasingthebacteriacellsintotheenvironment.

Buteveninwarmerclimates,risingtemperaturescanhelpgrowandspreaddangerousdiseases.Overadecadeago,researcherPaulEpsteinprophesiedthepossiblespreadofmosquito-bornillnessesasaresultofclimatechange.“Mosquitoesaresensitivetotemperaturechanges,”hesaid.“Warmingspeedsuptheirratesofreproductionandthenumberofbloodmealstheytake,makestheirbreeding(繁殖)seasonlong,andshortensthematurationperiodforthegermstheyspread”---allofwhichmakesthemmoreefficientatspreadingdisease.
