TheHEIMANNthermopilesensorconsistsofaseriesofthermoelements,formingasensitiveareacoveredbyanIR-absorbingmaterial.Thesensorishermeticallysealedintoametalhousing.ThesizeofthehousingissimilartoaTO-packagewithawindowopening.ThewindowisequippedwithanIR-transmissiblefilter.Anadditionaltemperaturereferencesensorcanbeinstalledinthesensorhousing.Thethermopilesensorexhibitsanalmostwhitenoise,comparabletoanohmicresistance.Thethermopileoutputsignalisdirectproportionaltoincidentradiationpowerlargelyindependentfromthewavelength.Thefrequencybehaviourcorrespondstoalowpasscharacteristic.
