Toimprovetheresults,anotherprogramwasstartedinMissourithatconcentratedonparentsasthechild’sfirstteachers.Thisprogramwasbasedonresearchshowingthatworkingwiththefamilyisthemosteffectivewayofhelpingchildrengetthebestpossiblestartinlife.Thefouryearstudyincluded380familieswhowereabouttohavetheirfirstchildandrepresenteddifferentsocioeconomicstatuses,agesandfamilystructures.Theprograminvolvedtrainededucatorsvisitingandworkingwiththeparentorparentsandthechild.Theprogramalsogavetheparentssomeguidance,andusefulskillsonchilddevelopment.

Atthree,thechildreninvolvedinthe“Missouri”programwereevaluatedwiththechildrenselectedfromthesamesocioeconomicbackgroundsandfamilysituations.Theresultswereobvious.Thechildrenintheprogramweremoreadvancedinlanguagedevelopment,problemsolvingandotherintellectualskillsthantheirpeers.Theyperformedequallywellregardlessofsocioeconomicbackgroundsorfamilystructures.Theonefactorthatwasfoundtoaffectthechild’sdevelopmentwasthepoorqualityofparentchildinteraction.Thatinteractionwasnotnecessarilybadinpoorerfamilies.
