Naturally,theEuropeansalsoimportedtheirownfestivals.Sotheslaveswereforcedtowatchastheirmasterscelebratedcarnivalwithfood,drink,andmaskeddances.InTrinidad,theslavesbegantoholdtheirowncarnivalcelebrations:
theypaintedtheirfaceswhite,imitatingtheirmastersandmakingfunofthem.ButatthesametimetheywerecontinuingtheirownAfricantraditions—suchaswalkingroundavillagewearingmasksandsinging—acustomwhichtheythoughtwouldbringgoodluck.
Whentheslavetradewasabolishedin1838theformerslavestookoverthecarnival.Itbecamemorecolourfulandmoreexcitingthanithadbeenbefore.Magnificentcostumesweremadeandmusicalbandscreated.Carnivalbecameacelebrationoffreedom.
