   Furtherevidencecanbeseeninstudyingsignlanguagesforthedeaf.Signlanguagesarenotsimplyagroupofgestures;theyusethesamegrammaticalmachinerythatisfoundinspokenlanguages.ThecreationofonesuchlanguagewasdocumentedquiterecentlyinNicaragua.Previously,althoughdeafchildrenweretaughtspeechandlipreadingintheclassrooms,intheplaygroundstheybegantoinventtheirownsignsystem,usingthegesturestheyusedathome.Itwasbasicallyapidginandtherewasnoconsistentgrammar.However,anewsystemwasbornwhenchildrenwhojoinedtheschoollaterdevelopedaquitedifferentsignlanguage.Itwasbasedonthesignsoftheolderchildren,butitwasshorterandeasiertounderstand,andithadalargerangeofspecialuseofgrammar
