ThemonwealthofAustraliaisacountryintheSouthernHemisphereprisingtheworld'ssmallestcontinentandanumberofislandsintheSouthern,IndianandPacificOceans.Australia'sneighbouringcountriesareIndonesia,EastTimorandPapuaNewGuineatothenorth,theSolomonIslands,VanuatuandNewCaledoniatothenortheast,andNewZealandtothesoutheast.ThecontinentofAustraliahasbeeninhabitedforover40,000yearsbyIndigenousAustralians.AftersporadicvisitsbyfishermenfromthenorthandbyEuropeanexplorersandmerchantsstartinginthe17thcentury,theeasternhalfofthecontinentwasclaimedbytheBritishin1770andofficiallysettledasthepenalcolonyofNewSouthWaleson26January1788.Asthepopulationgrewandnewareaswereexplored,anotherfivelargelyself-governingCrownColoniesweresuccessivelyestablishedoverthecourseofthe19thcentury.

On1January1901,thesixcoloniesfederatedandthemonwealthofAustraliawasformed.Sincefederation,AustraliahasmaintainedastableliberaldemocraticpoliticalsystemandremainsamonwealthRealm.Thecurrentpopulationofaround20.4millionisconcentratedmainlyinthelargecoastalcitiesofSydney,Melbourne,Brisbane,PerthandAdelaide.

TheyarefoundonoffshoreislandsontheSouthAustralianandWesternAustraliancoast.TheyareclassifiedasverminonKangarooIsland,wheretheyseasonallybreeduptolargenumbersanddamagetheechidnahabitatontheisland.

TammarWallabiesarealsofoundinNewZealandwheretheyweretransportedfromtheSouthAustralianmainlandpopulationwhichhassincebeendriventoextinctionbyferalcatsandfoxes.

AlsoknownastheDarmaWallaby,theTammarWallaby'ssmallsize（approx8kg,similartoalargecat）andeaseofkeepingincaptivitymakesitapopularzooanimal.
