Therearealotofdifferentsystemsforfillingpens（particularlyamongolderpens,whenmakersweretechnologicallymoreadventurous）.Inordertogetthemostoutofyourpen,you'llneedtoknowthebasics（aswellassomeundocumentedtricks）forfillingthem.Here,I'vepreparedinstructionsthatshouldcoverabout95%ormoreofthepensyou'llrunintointhefield.Ifyou'reunsureastowhichinstructionstouse,trybrowsingthesitetofindpensofsimilardesign.

Almostasimportantasknowinghowtofillthepenisknowinghowtocleanit.Mostpenperformanceproblemscanbecuredbyagoodcleaning,andyou'llalsowanttocleanthepenbeforechangingthecolorofinkyouuse.Andso,I'vealsoincludedinstructionsforcleaningeachtypeofpen.

There'sonefillingtipthatappliestojustaboutallofthesystemslistedbelow:

afteroperatingthefiller,besuretoleavethepointintheinkbottleandwaitforacountoftenorso.Thisgivesthepenachancetofullyrelievetheinternalvacuumanddrawinthemostinkpossible.

"Eyedroppers"andsafetypens

Ifyourpendoesn'tseemtohaveanyvisiblemeansoffilling,butitcanbedisassembledtorevealabigemptybarrelwithnoholes（orsacs,springs,etc.）,youmayhavewhatisknowntocollectorsasaneyedropperpen.

Theearliestfountainpensweresimplysealedvialswithapointandfeedatoneend.These,aswellasthelaterSafetyPens,werefilledwithaneyedropperthatwasusuallysuppliedwiththepen.Ifyoureyedropperismissing（asisusuallythecase）,youcansimplyuseastandardeyedropper（glassorplastic）fromyourlocaldrugstore,orbuyasyringeorpipettefromInkPaletteorPendemonium.Whateveryouuse,remembertocleanitoutafterusesothatinkdoesn'tdryinsideit（orleakfromit）.

Filling

Tofillyoureyedropperpen,simplyremovethesection（holdingitpointupsoasnottospillanyremainingink）.Youmayemptyanyremaininginkfromthepenandrinseitoutquicklyacoupleoftimesundercooltapwater（don'tsoakthesepens,astheyareinvariablymadeofhardrubberorsomeothermaterialthatwillswellordiscolor）.Then,simplyuseaneyedroppertotransferinkfromabottleintothebarrel.Replacethesection,makingsureitfitstightly.Ifyoursectionhasbecomeloosewithageandwear,itwillprobablyleak;sometimesyoucanrefurbishthembyrubbingdrybathsoaponthethreads.

Tofillasafetypen,removeitscap（holdingthepenpoint-up）.Aswiththeeyedropperpen,youmayemptyoutanyremaininginkandrinseoutthepenundercooltapwater.Then,transferinkintothebarrelusinganeyedropperandreplacethecap（orextendthepointifyoumeantostartwritingrightaway）.

Cleaning

AsInotedabove,youcansimplyrinseoutyoureyedropperandsafetypensundercooltapwater.Ifyoulike,youcanfillthemabouthalffullwithwater,closethemup,andthenshakethemtogetatmoreofthedried-upink.

Eyedroppersandsafetiesarealmostalwaysveryoldandratherdelicatecreatures;donotusesolventsincleaningthem,anddonotsoakthem（thehardrubbercanbecomepermanentlydiscloloredafterextendedexposuretowater）.

Sacfillers

Thevastmajorityoffountainpensmadebefore1950orsoare'sacfillers'thatkepttheirinkinsoftlatexrubbersacs（sometimescalled'bladders'）insidethebarrel.Thesepensusedvariouskindsofdevicestodeflatethesac;youthenheldthepointintheinkandreleasedthelever（orbutton,orcrescent,etc.）toallowthesactoreinflateanddrawinink.

Sacfillersofferthebestbalanceofease,convenience,andeffectiveness,whichisprobablywhytheypredominatedduringtheclassicfountainpenyears.

Here'showtospotthecommontypesofsacfillers:

∙Leverfiller:

hasalong,straightspring-loadedleveralongthesideofthebarrel.Youcanslipyourfingernailunderoneend（usuallytheendawayfromthepoint）andpullituplikeasuitcaselatch[example].

∙Buttonfiller:

Usuallyhasaremovableblindcapwhich,whenremoved,revealsasmallspring-loadedbuttonthatsticksupnomorethanafewmillimeters（butdon'tconfusethiswiththelong,lightlysprungplungersfoundonVacumaticpens）[example].

∙Crescentfiller:

Hasabigdiskorcrescentshapestickingoutofitsside,lockedinplacebyaringaroundthebarrel[example].

Filling

Herearespecificinstructionsforthethreemostnumeroustypesofsacfillers:

Leverfiller:

holdthepenoverasinkorapapertowelandcarefullylifttheleverawayfromthepentoa90-degreeangle（orasfarasitwillgowithoutforcing）;thiswillexpelanyinkremaininginthepen.Putthepointdowninaninkbottleuntilitisfullyimmersed.Then,flicktheleverbacktothedownposition（orreleaseitifitisunderspringtension）,waitforacountoftenorso;removethepenfromtheinkwellandwipeitdown.The"flick"hereisimportant,sinceifyouslowlyreleasetheleverthepenmaynotfillaseffectively.

Buttonfiller:

removetheblindcaptoexposethebutton.Graspthepeninyourhand,pointdown.Withyourthumb,pressandholdthebuttontoexpelanyremainingink,thenimmersethepointintheinkwell（aswiththeleverfiller）andslipyourthumbsidewaysoffthebutton（toallowittosnapbrisklybackintoposition）.Waitforatencount.Removethepenfromtheinkandwipeitdown.

Crescentfiller:

turnthelockingringsothatitsslitislinedupwiththecrescent（i.e.,thecrescentisunlocked）.Pressthecrescentintothebarreltoexpelanyremainingink.Immersethepointinink,thenreleasethecrescent.Waitforatencount.Removethepenfromtheinkandwipeitdown.Turnthelockingringsothatthecrescentislockedawayfromthebarrel.

Cleaning

Theeasiestwaytocleanasacfilleristorepeatedlyfillitwithcoolcleartapwater,thenemptyit.It'sagoodideatowaitafewsecondsbeforeemptyingeachrinse;thiswillallowmoreinktobedissolvedintherinsewater.Continuefillingandemptyinguntiltheejectedrinsewaterrunsreasonablyclear（aslighttintisOK,andshouldnotinterferewithyournewinkcolorformorethanafewlinesofwriting）.Bytheway,don'tgettoocarriedawayflippingaroundthosefragilelevers;youcanbendthemorloosenabitofplasticfromthepenifyouusetoomuchforce.

Pistonfillers

Ifyourpenhasablindcapthattwiststhroughafewrevolutionsandstops,youmayhaveapistonfiller.Ifthepenhasatransparentortranslucentbarrel,youwillbeabletoseethepistongoupanddown.ManyGermanpens（suchasPelikansandMontblancs）usethepistonfillersystem;theinstructionsherealsoapplytopiston-typecartridgeconvertersusedtodayinmostcartridgepens.Pistonfillersareeasytofill,andusuallyholdagreatdealofink.TheycanberathertedioustocleanoutunlessyouareabletomakeashortcutIdescribebelow.

Filling

Ifyoufindthesedirectionstobecounter-intuitive,keepinmindthatmostpistonpengearswork"inreverse;"thatis,whenyouscrewtheknobupandawayfromthebarrel,thepistongoesdown（towardthepoint）,whilewhenyouscrewtheknobbackdown,thepistontravelsup（towardthebackofthepen）.

Tofillthepistonfiller,simplytwistthepistonknobupandawayfromthebarrel;thiswillmovethepistondownandexpelanyinkremaininginthepen.Immersethepointintotheink,andthencrankthepistonbackdowntothefull-upposition.Removethepointfromtheink;whilestillholdingitovertheinkwell,twistthepistonbackdownjustabit,enoughtoallowthreedropsofinktoescapefromthepoint.Then,retightenthepistonandwipethependown.The"threedrops"businessisrecommendedbynearlyallpiston-penmanufacturers,althoughsomepenusersgetbyjustfinewithoutit.Isuspectthatreleasingsomeinkthroughthefeedmayrelievetheremainingvacuumandreleaseanyairbubblescaughtinthefeed,whichwillmakethepenflowmoresmoothly.

NOTE:

Neverforceapistonknobthatisfrozenorstuck;youcanshearoffthepistonscrewifyoudo.Ifyourpistonpenisstuck,youcantryremovingthepoint（ifpossible）anddrippingsomewaterintothebarrel,leavingittosoakforafewhours.Thisshould,withanyluck,freeupthepistontomove.Ifyoucan'tremovethepoint,youcantrythoroughlysoakingthepen（ifitisofamaterialthatcanstandthetreatment）;thismayintroduceenoughwaterintothebarreltounstickthepiston.Finally,ifneitherofthesetricksworks,sendthepentothefactoryortoaqualifiedrepairperson.

Cleaning

Mostpistonfillersdonothaveremovablepoints.Thismeansthattheonlyeffectivewaytocleanthemistorepeatedlyfillandemptythem.Thiscanbetedious,sinceyoucanrinseasacpenfourorfivetimesinthetimeittakesyoutorinsethepistonpenonce,andyoucan'tworkupasmuchpressureinapistonpenasyoucaninasacpen.

Ifyouownalate-modelPelikanpistonfiller（madeafter,say,1980）,itmayhaveapointthatcanbeunscrewedfromthepen.ThefrontsofthesectionsofcertainlaterOMASpens（suchastheOgiveandMilord）canalsobeunscrewed.Thiswillpermityoutorinseboththereservoirandthepointandfeedthoroughlyundercooltapwater（thisisnotsomethingyouneedtodo,orshoulddo,allthetime:
