AlbertEinstein'scontributiontomodernphysicsissimplyunique.Hisscientificcareerwasaconstantquestfortheuniversalandimmutablelaws,whichgovernthephysicalworld.Histheoriesspannedthefundamentalquestionsofnature,fromtheverylargetotheverysmall,fromthecosmostosub-atomicparticles.Heoverturnedtheestablishedconceptsoftimeandspace,energyandmatter.Einsteinplayedacrucialroleinestablishingthetwopillarsof20thcenturyphysics:

hewasthefatherofthetheoryofrelativityandamajorcontributortoquantumtheory.

SciencewasAlbertEinstein'sfirstlove,yethealwaysfoundtimetodevotetirelesseffortstopoliticalcausesclosetohisheart.Hisardenthumanismledhimtostriveforpeace,freedomandsocialjustice.TheyoungEinsteinfoundtheauthoritarianismandmilitarismoftheGermaneducationalsystemprofoundlydisturbing.ThevirulentnationalismandbrutalityoftheFirstWorldWarservedtoconfirmEinstein'spacifistandinternationalistconvictions.

Throughouthislife,AlbertEinsteinfeltacloseaffinitywiththeJewishpeople.EinsteindefinedJudaismasaculturewithasharedhistoricalpastandcommonethicalvaluesratherthanasaninstitutionalizedreligion.ForhimthemainvaluesofJudaismwereintellectualaspirationandthepursuitofsocialjustice.LikeSpinoza,hedidnotbelieveinapersonalgod,butthatthedivinerevealsitselfinthephysicalworld.EinsteinsupportedthecreationofahomelandfortheJewsinPalestine.However,hestipulatedthatanysolutionoftheArab-Jewishconflicthadtobebasedonmutualunderstandingandconsent.

WasEinstein'sBrainDifferent?
