Deliberatelymakingaroadicysoundslikeamethodfordisaster,butin16th-centuryChinaithelpedthingsrunsmoothly.RepairstotheForbiddenCityinBeijingin1557calledforhugestonesfromaquarry(采石场)morethan70kmaway.Thebiggestwasthe300-ton“LargeStoneCarving.”Suchstonesweretooheavyforanycart,andtoofragileforrollers.Thebuildersadoptedawisealternativeapproachtocarrytheheavystone.

Thestoneblockswerepushedalongtheroadonwoodensledges(雪橇).Modernengineershavecalculatedthatitwouldtake1,500workerstodragasledgeonthedirtroad,butonly300onice.Ancienttextssuggestedtheicewasmadeslipperywithmorewater;thisreducedthefrictionfurtherandjust50mencouldpullasledge.Thistechniqueonlyworkswhenthetemperatureisclosetozero,otherwisethefilmofwaterfreezestooquickly.

TheresearchersatPrincetonUniversityestimatedthattheblockscouldbemovedatsixmetresaminute,andthejourneycouldbecompletedin28days.Thiswouldbewellbeforethespringwhentheicewouldmelt.
