    ThefollowingstudyhintswillhelpyouintheweeksleadinguptotheIELTS.

　　Becomefamiliarwiththetestasearlyaspossible.TheskillsbeingtestedintheIELTStakeaperiodoftimetobuildup.CrammingisnotaneffectivestudytechniqueforIELTS.

Useyourstudytimeefficiently.Studywhenyouarefreshand,afteryouhaveplannedatimetable,makesurethatyoukeeptoit.Setgoalsandensurethatyouhaveadequatebreaks.IntheIELTStest,eachofthefourBandModules—Listening,Reading,WritingandSpeaking—carriesthesameweight.Studyeachskillcarefullyandspendmoretimeontheskillsinwhichyoufeelyouareweak.

Beawareoftheexactprocedureforthetest.Beveryclearontheorderofeachsection,itslengthandthespecificquestiontypes.Therearemanyresourcesavailabletohelpyoupracticetheseskills.

　　Havingastudypartnerorastudygroupisanexcellentidea.Otherstudentsmayraiseissuesthatyoumaynothaveconsidered.

Countdowntothetest

Daysbeforethetest

　　Thisisnotatimeforintensivestudy.Itisatimetoreviewskillsandyourtesttechnique.Itisimportanttoexercise,eat,restandsleepwellduringtheweekinwhichyouwilltakethetest.

　　Leavenothingtochance.Ifyoudonotknowhowtogettothetestcentre,trygoingthereatasimilartimeoneortwoweeksbeforetherealtest.

Thenightbeforethetest

　　Youmusthaveagooddinnerandgotobedatyournormaltime—nottooearlyandnottoolate,asyoudonotwanttodisruptyoursleeppatternifpossible.

　　Haveeverythingreadythatyouneedtotakewithyoutothetestsoyoucansimplypickitupinthemorning,forexample,thetestregistrationform,passport,testnumber,pens,pencils,erasers,etc.Apenthatrunsdryorapencilthatbreakscantakeseveralminutestoreplace.Checkbeforetheexamexactlywhatarticlesyouneed.Setyouralarmclockthenightbeforeorarrangeawake-upcall.

Onthemorningofthetest

　　Eatagoodbreakfast.Youwillhaveseveralhoursofconcentrationaheadofyouandyouwillneedfoodanddrinkinthemorning.Youmayevenwanttobringmorefoodorasnackwithyou,especiallyifyourspeakingtestisatalatertimethatday.Youcannot,however,takefoodordrinkintotheexamroom.Ifpossible,wearawatchincaseyoucannotseetheclockintheexamroom.Itisessentialthatyoukeeptrackoftime.

　　Giveyourselfplentyoftimetogettothetestcentre.Youwillberequiredtocompletearegistrationformandtoshowyourpassportbeforeyouentertheexaminationroomsoyoumustarriveatthetimespecifiedbyyourtestcentre.Ifyouareearly,youcouldgoforawalk.Ifyouarelate,youwillnotbeallowedtoenter.Avoidtheaddedtensionofhavingtorush.

Duringthetest

　　Moststudentsatthetestwillfeelnervous.Thisisquitenormal.Infact,itcanactuallybequitehelpfulintermsofmotivation.Itmaymakeyoualertandhelpyoutofocus.Theaimisforyoutotrytoperformatyouroptimumlevel.

　　Incontrast,highlevelsofanxietycanaffectastudent’sperformance.However,muchofthisanxietycanbeovercomebygoodpreparation,familiaritywithtestdetailsandapositiveattitude.

　　Theexaminationroomshouldbesuitablefortesting,thatis,thelighting,ventilationandtemperatureshouldbeappropriate.Ifyouareuncomfortablebecauseofanyofthesefactorsorifthereissomeotherproblem,suchasnotbeingabletoheartherecordingoftheListeningModule,makesureyouaskthepersoninchargetodosomethingaboutit.Forexample,youmayasktochangeseats.

Examinationtechnique

　　ByusinggoodexaminationtechniqueyoucouldhelptoimproveyouroverallscorefortheIELTStest.

　　Rememberthateverysectionismarkedindependently.Donotjeopardiseyourperformanceinonesectionjustbecauseyoubelievethatyouhavedonebadlyinanother.Donotunderestimateortrytopredictyouroutcome.Youmay,infact,havedonebetterthanyouimagined.

　　Focusonwhatyouknowratherthanonwhatyoudon’tknowwhileyouaredoingthetest.

　　Ensurethatyouadheretothetimessuggestedastheyusuallycorrespondtothenumberofmarksgivenforaparticularquestion.

　　IntheListeningandReadingModules,itisagoodideatowritedownananswer,evenifyouarenotsureofit,beforemovingontothenextquestion.Manystudentsintendtoreturntotheanswerstheyhaveomittedattheendofthetestbutdonothaveenoughtimetodoso.Furthermore,bywritingyourbestanswerattheactualtimeofreadingthequestion,yousavethetimeyouneedtospendagainonre-readingthequestionandre-acquaintingyourselfwiththesubjectmatter.Ifyouarenotconfidentaboutyouranswer,markitinsomewayandreturntoitattheend.

Donotleaveanyanswersblank.Youarenotpenalisedforincorrectanswers,so‘guess’wisely.

SkillsfortheListeningModule

　　IntheIELTSListeningModule,therecordingisplayedonceonly.Youmust,therefore,useanumberofstrategiestohelpyoulistenclosely.ThereareafewmainskillsyouwillneedtodowellintheIELTSListeningModule:

Understandingtheinstructions

　　Instructionsarebothwrittenonthequestionpaperandspokenonthetape.Readandlistentoeverywordintheinstructionsverycarefully.Ensurethatyoufollowthemexactlyandanswerinthecorrectway.

Previewingandpredicting

　　Inadditiontothe30secondsbeforeeachsection,youwillalsobegiven30secondsaftereachsectiontolookoveryouranswers.Ifyouaresatisfiedwithyouranswersinthesectionyouhavejustfinished,moveontothenextsectionandusethefull60secondsforpreviewing.

Listeningforspecificinformation

　　UseofpreviewingandpredictingskillswillhelpyoulistenforthespecificinformationyouneedtoanswerthequestionsintheListeningModule.Listeningforkeywordsandcommonconnectivewordsoftenhelpstosignalthespecificinformationthatyouneedinordertoanswerthequestion.Makesurethat,whileyouareactuallywritingyouranswers,youcontinuetolistentotheinformationgivenintherecordingsastherewillnotbeasecondopportunitytohearit.

Checkingandrewriting

　　Youaregivenabout30secondsaftereachsectiontocheckyouranswers.Checkthatallyouranswerscorrespondwiththegiveninstructions.

　　Makesurethatyouhaveansweredeveryquestion.Marksarenotdeductedforincorrectanswersso,ifyouareunsureofaparticularanswer,youshouldguessbywritingdownwhatyouthinkisthemostlikelyanswer.

Checkthatyouhaveincludedonlywhatisnecessaryintheanswer.

　　AttheendoftheListeningModule,youaregivenabout10minutestotransferyouranswersfromthequestionpaperontotheanswersheet.Scanyouranswerstoensurethatyouhavetransferredthemcorrectlysothatthenumberonthequestionpapercorrespondswiththenumberontheanswersheet.Beespeciallycarefulwhentransferringanswersfromtablesassometimestheitemsarenotlinearlyordered.

SkillsfortheReadingModule

　　OneofthemaindifficultiesexperiencedbystudentsdoingtheReadingModuleisnothavingenoughtimetocompletethetest.Itis,therefore,essentialtoreadbothefficientlyandeffectively.

　　ThereareafewmainskillsthatyouwillneedinordertodowellintheIELTSReadingModule.Itisusefultousethefollowingprocedureforeachtextthatisgiven.

（a）Studythepassagebynoting:

（b）Studykeypartsofthepassagebyskimming.Readthefirstparagraphwhichoftenfocusesonthemainidea.Thefirstsentenceofeachparagraphusuallyexpressesthekeypointsoftheparagraph.Generally,theconcludingparagraphprovidesasummaryofthegivenpassage.Youmaywishtohighlightthesewithapen.

Interpretingtheinstructionsandquestions（about2minutes）

　　Readeachwordintheinstructionscarefullyandensurethatyouunderstandexactlywhatisrequiredandinwhatform.Forexample,theinstructionsmaysay,‘Choosenomorethanthreewordsfromthepassageforeachanswer’.Inthissituation,itwouldnotbeacceptabletowritefourormorewords.Oftenstudentsfindtherightanswerbutpresentitinthewrongformand,unfortunately,donotscoreanymarksforthatanswer.Understandingwhatisrequired,therefore,isjustasimportantasfindingtherightanswerinthepassage.
