Firstofall,wemayaskunderwhatconditionstheclassichistorianisenabled-orauthorized-himselftodesignate,inhisdiscourse,theactbywhichhepromulgatesit.Inotherwords,what,onthelevelofdiscourse-andnotoflanguage,aretheshifters(inJakobsonssenseoftheterm)

Itwouldappearthathistoricaldiscourseinvolvestworegulartypesofshifters.Thefirsttypecompriseswhatwemightcalltheshiftersoflistening.ThiscategoryhasbeenidentifiedbyJakobson,ontheleveloflanguage,withthetermtestimonialaccordingtotheformulaCeCal/Caa2:

Thesecondtypeofshiftercomprisesalltheexplicitsignswherebytheutterer-inthiscase,thehistorian・organizeshisowndiscourse,takingupthethreadormodifyinghisapproachinsomewayinthecourseofnarration:
