MaryleboneRoad,whichrecordedthehighestannualmeanlevelsofthepollutant,morethandoublethelegalEUlimit.

   Pollutionfromnitrogenoxides(NO)isresponsibleforlensofthousandsofprematuredeaths(过早死)acrossEurope,withtheUKsufferingaparticularlyhightoll.Muchofthepollutionisproducedbydieselcars,whichemitaboutsixtimesmorethanallowedintheofficiallab-basedteats.

FedericaBertocchini,co-authorofthestudy,saystheworms'abilitytobreakdowntheireverydayfood-beeswax--alsoallowsthemtobreakdownplastic"Waxisacomplexmixture,butthebasicbondinpolyethylene,thecarbon-carbonbond,isthereaswell,"sheexplains."Thewaxwormevolvedamethodorsystemtobreakthisbond."
