1.Unitofstudyinformation
1.1.FacultyHandbookdescription
Thisunitprovidesstudentswithinsightsintothedebateabouttheeffectofglobalisationonindustrialrelationsbyusingcomparativeanalysistoidentifytherangeoffactorsthataccountforsimilaritiesanddifferenceinnationalpatternsofindustrialrelations.Theunitfocusesonprovidinganunderstandingofthenatureofindustrialrelationspatternsindevelopedanddevelopingmarketeconomiesandinvitesstudentstocomparearangeofdevelopmentsacrossthesecountries.
1.2.Aimsandcontext
Setinthecontextofdebatesabouttheimpactofglobalisationandtheoreticalargumentswhichdistinguishbetweendifferenttypesofmarketeconomies,thisunitofstudyencouragesstudentstoexplorethecomplexrangeoffactorswhichshapehowemployersandemployeesrelatetoeachotheracrossarangeofdevelopedanddevelopingmarketeconomies.Italsointroducesstudentstosomeoftheinternationalinstitutionsandactorswhichinfluencenationalpatternsofindustrialrelations.Theunitofstudyisdesignedtoprovideanintroductiontothestudyofindustrialrelationsandhumanresourcemanagementcanbeincludedinaprogrammeofstudyoninternationalbusinessorcanbetakenasastandaloneunitofstudyinanybusinessandmanagementdegree.

Bytheendofthisunitofstudy,studentsshould:
1.haveanunderstandingoftherangeoffactors(economic,historical,political,nationalandinternational)whichmayinfluencenationalindustrialrelationspatterns
2.befamiliarwithcontemporarydebatesaboutglobalisationanditsimplicationsfornationalpatternsofindustrialrelations
3.beabletocriticallyassessthevariousconceptualapproachestointernationalandcomparativeindustrialrelations
4.befamiliarwiththepotentialbenefitsofcomparativeanalysisforstudyingtopicsinindustrialrelations
5.beabletocommunicatetootherskeyfeaturesandissuesinindustrialrelationsinvariouscountriesstudiedintheunitofstudy
6.havecomparedoneormorecontemporarydevelopmentsinindustrialrelationsacrossvariouscountriescoveredintheunitofstudy.

Youaretheleaderofatradedelegationwhichisvisitingtwocountriesinwhichyourgovernmentisconsideringinvesting.Yourdelegationincludesrepresentativesfromthebusinesscommunityaswellastradeunions.Yourreportwill:
▪Dealwiththeindustrialrelationsenvironmentineachcountry.
▪Includeconsiderationofeachcountryfrombothanemployers’perspective(e.g.thelegalframeworkrelatingtoemployment)aswellasfromtheemployees’perspective(e.g.theirrightsatwork,freedomofassociation,collectivebargainingetc.)
▪Drawconclusionsabouttherelativemeritsofeachcountryinrelationtothesematters.
▪Provideevidenceforyourargumentsbasedonavailableliteratureonemploymentrelationsineachcountry.
Yourbriefingpaperwillbetypedindoublespacingandwillnotexceedthreethousand(3,000)words.Itwillincludeabibliographyofreferencesthatyouhaveused.Therewillbeanexecutivesummaryofnomorethanoneparagraphwhichoutlinesyourmainfindings(notincludedinthewordcount).
Acopyofyourpaperwillbesubmittedatthetimeofyourpresentation,plussufficientcopiesofyourexecutivesummarytodistributetotheotherstudents.
Attheseminar,youwillbeinvitedtodiscussyourpaperandanswerquestionsfromthelecturerandstudents.

AssessmentSubmissionProcedures
1.Seminarpaper–studentswillsubmittheirseminarpapertothelectureronthedayofpresentation.
CommencingstudentsshouldcompletetheacademichonestymoduleavailableviaBlackboardbeforetheirfirstassessmentsubmission.
Studentsmustcompleteandincludethe‘individualassessmentcoversheet’totheirseminarpapertostatethatthepapersaretheirownworkandtheymusthavecompletedtheacademichonestymoduleonBlackboard.
2.5.Workloadandminimumrequirements
AccordingtotheAcademicBoard,studentworkloadforsixcreditpointunitsequatestoanaverageof9-12hoursofstudenteffortperweekpersemesterandapproximately4,500-6,000words(orequivalent)ofstudentoutput.
