Faculty Handbook descriptionThis unit pro

4、vides students with insights into the debate about the effect of globalisation on industrial relations by using comparative analysis to identify the range of factors that account for similarities and difference in national patterns of industrial relations. The unit focuses on providing an understand

5、ing of the nature of industrial relations patterns in developed and developing market economies and invites students to compare a range of developments across these countries.1.2. Aims and contextSet in the context of debates about the impact of globalisation and theoretical arguments which distingu

6、ish between different types of market economies, this unit of study encourages students to explore the complex range of factors which shape how employers and employees relate to each other across a range of developed and developing market economies. It also introduces students to some of the interna

7、tional institutions and actors which influence national patterns of industrial relations. The unit of study is designed to provide an introduction to the study of industrial relations and human resource management can be included in a programme of study on international business or can be taken as a

8、 stand alone unit of study in any business and management degree. 2. Learning outcomes, teaching and learning activities & assessment2.1. Intended learning outcomesBy the end of this unit of study, students should: 1. have an understanding of the range of factors (economic, historical, political, na

9、tional and international) which may influence national industrial relations patterns2. be familiar with contemporary debates about globalisation and its implications for national patterns of industrial relations3. be able to critically assess the various conceptual approaches to international and co

10、mparative industrial relations4. be familiar with the potential benefits of comparative analysis for studying topics in industrial relations5. be able to communicate to others key features and issues in industrial relations in various countries studied in the unit of study6. have compared one or mor

11、e contemporary developments in industrial relations across various countries covered in the unit of study.Learning outcomes 1-4 relate to the graduate attribute of ethical, social and political understanding. Learning outcomes 5 and 6 relate to communication and information literacy.2.2. Learning an

12、d teaching activitiesClassesStudents are encouraged to attend and participate in all classes. Students are required to make a presentation in seminars. Students will be allocated to seminars in week one. Seminars commence in week two. Textbook The following book is recommended as a text for this uni

Required and Recommended readingsIn addition to c

14、hapters from the textbook, students are required to consult other readings associated with each topic. Unless otherwise indicated these articles are available full text online from the electronic journal holdings of the library and can be accessed through the library website (http:/www.library.usyd.

15、edu.au/ejournals/ejalph.html). Where the library does not hold electronic copies of journals or books, an electronic copy will be made available electronically through Blackboard. Readings for Seminar PaperIn addition to the textbook and readings, students will be required to search for additional r

16、eadings in books and journals. BlackboardBlackboard will be used to post lecture notes, readings and handouts and to make announcements associated with this unit of study. When possible, lecture overheads will be posted on the day of the lecture or soon after the lecture. Students are encouraged to

Seminar Paper Weighting: 40% Le

22、ngth: no more than 3,000 words Due: on the day of presentation. You are the leader of a trade delegation which is visiting two countries in which your government is considering investing. Your delegation includes representatives from the business community as well as trade unions. Your report will:

23、Deal with the industrial relations environment in each country. Include consideration of each country from both an employers perspective (e.g. the legal framework relating to employment) as well as from the employees perspective (e.g. their rights at work, freedom of association, collective bargaini

24、ng etc.) Draw conclusions about the relative merits of each country in relation to these matters. Provide evidence for your arguments based on available literature on employment relations in each country.Your briefing paper will be typed in double spacing and will not exceed three thousand (3,000) w

25、ords. It will include a bibliography of references that you have used. There will be an executive summary of no more than one paragraph which outlines your main findings (not included in the word count). A copy of your paper will be submitted at the time of your presentation, plus sufficient copies

26、of your executive summary to distribute to the other students. At the seminar, you will be invited to discuss your paper and answer questions from the lecturer and students.Failure to either submit your paper on time or attend the seminar on the due date will mean that you are required to do a new p

27、aper and presentation. Final Exam Weighting: 40% 120 minutes Essay format Date: (date to be confirmed) The final exam will be held on a date to be notified. The duration of the exam will be for 2 hours and students will be asked to answer 2 questions based on countries covered during the unit which

28、were not addressed in their seminar paper. Assessment Submission Procedures1. Seminar paper students will submit their seminar paper to the lecturer on the day of presentation. Commencing students should complete the academic honesty module available via Blackboard before their first assessment subm

29、ission. Students must complete and include the individual assessment cover sheet to their seminar paper to state that the papers are their own work and they must have completed the academic honesty module on Blackboard. 2.5. Workload and minimum requirementsAccording to the Academic Board, student w

30、orkload for six credit point units equates to an average of 9-12 hours of student effort per week per semester and approximately 4,500-6,000 words (or equivalent) of student output. At the very least I expect you to:a. attend the lecture and your seminar each week. b. have read at least one chapter

31、or article related to the countries being discussed in each seminar. 2.6. Feedback Students can expect the following feedback: 1. Students will receive comments and an evaluation within two weeks of the seminar when they make their presentations. 2.7. Academic honesty and plagiarismCommencing studen

32、ts should complete the academic honesty module available via Blackboard before their first assessment submission.
