AmongRebecca'stalentsaremusic,bothpianoandvoice.Shecansketch,talkFrenchlikeanative,dance,act,mimic.NotonlydoesherphysicalcharmattractLordSteyne,butherwitandmimicryandherabilitytogetmoneyoutofhim,evenwhenherealizessheisoutwittinghim.Themoremoneyshewheedlesoutofhim,themoreamusedheis,untilthefataldaywhenRawdonwalksinonthetwoofthem.

Thackerayhascalledthisbookanovelwithoutahero.ActuallytheonlygentlemaninthebookisWilliamDobbin,butasThackeraytakespainstopointout,hisfeetaretoobigforhimtoqualifyinVanityFair.Hisnameindicatesaplodder—aworkhorse—adog,even;hisdevotiontoAmeliaisdog-like.But,intheend,evenBecky,themostardentadmirerofVanityFair,wishesshemighthavehadamanlikeDobbin,in
