“Savethewhales!

”That’swhatthepictureonJakeSmith’sbedroomwallsaid.Jakelikedhavingapicturethatsaidsomethingimportantthatshowedhecared.Hejustneverexpectedtogetachancetosavearealwhale,onerightinhisownneighbourbood.

ItwasaSaturdaymorningwhenthenewspaperfirstreportedthewhale’scoming.AgroupoftheanimalswereswimmingclosetothebeachinJake’shometown.Allthelocalpeoplerushedouttothebeachtoseethem.Theywereexpectingabeautifulshow,betterthanamovie,butnothingthey’dhavetodoanythingabout.

Thenonewhaleswamintheirdirection,directlytowardsland.Itcameinwiththewaves,andwhenthewavesreceded,itstayed.Itshugebodyrestedonthesand.Suddenly,Jakeandhisfamilyandalltheotherswerenolongersightseers.Theyhadtobecomerescuers.Afewpeoplerantowardstheanimal.Theypushedandtriedtoforcethewhalebackintothewater,butitwasnouse.

Inmaybehardtobelieve,buttheAmericanRevolution(革命)–thewarthatfreedtheAmericanstatesfromBritishcontrol–beganoveracupoftea.Teawasnottheonlythingthatcausedthewar,ofcourse,butitplayedaverybigpart.

InNorthAmerica,thelocalpeopledidnotlikehavingtopaysuchhighprices.InsteadofoverpayingforteafromtheBritish,theyturnedtoDutchtraders,whosecretlybroughtteatothecountrythatwasjustasgood–andmuchlessexpensive.Althoughthisbrokethelaw,theAmericanpeopledidn’tcare.Theygotthesamecupofteaatamuchlowerprice.

TheEastIndiaCompany,however,didn’tlikethisatall.Bythe1760s,theywerelosingmillionsofpoundseachyeartoDutchtraders–ahugeamountofmoneyinatimewhen£60ayearwasconsideredagoodincome.InsteadofreducingtheirpricestocompetewiththeDutch,thecompanyaskedtheBritishgovernmentforhelpandthegovernmentagreed.
