Google to Stop Searching Email to SellAdvertisements

Google says it is going to stop searching the email ofits users to sell online advertisements.

The technology company said on Friday that,"Consumer Gmail content will not be used or scannedfor any ads personalization after this change."

The company announced the change on its website. It said it would stop scanning email at atime later this year.

For years, privacy rights activists and many users had raised concerns about the emailscanning.

Competitors Microsoft and Apple also have criticized Google for mining users' emails in order tosell advertising.

Google has been scanning email in its Gmail service in order to match subjects that people werewriting about with advertisements. For example, someone writing about food might start seeingads for cooking equipment.

Advertisements are still going to appear in Gmail, says Google. However, instead of scanningemail content, the company says it will use other signals to find out what ads will appeal to itsusers.

It notes that ads shown on users' email accounts can be controlled with the user's settings.Google says it is possible to disable the ad personalization at any time using the settings.

Google introduced Gmail in 2004 at no cost to the user. The company says about 1.2 billionpeople use the electronic message service.

The company noted that the decision "brings Gmail ads in line with how we personalize ads forother Google products."

More than three million companies pay to use Google G Suite for businesses, according toGoogle.

The service does not have ads and does not scan emails. However, Google said that some of itsbusiness users believed that the company was scanning email in its business email service.

By ending scanning for all its email services, Google may be hoping more businesses will use theG Suite service.

Re-Growing Human Body Parts

The ability to regenerate or recreate missing bodyparts sounds more like part of a science fiction storythan reality.

But researchers are finding evidence thatregeneration may be possible someday in the futurewith improvements in technology. They imagine using 3D-printing to make a kidney forsomeone in need of a replacement. They also talk about possibly using bioelectricity to causecells to build new tissue and organs.

These ideas and others were discussed earlier this month at the World Science Festival in NewYork City. The presentation was called "Forever Young:

 The Promise of Human Regeneration."

Scientists talked about the future of regenerative medicine, which combines the body's abilityto heal itself with progress in biomedical engineering.

Dany Spencer Adams is a research professor at Tufts University in Massachusetts. He told VOAthat researchers have found that bioelectrical signals can lead to cellular processes in frogtadpoles. He said such signals may someday start the formation of nerves, muscles and otherbody parts.

"This is the cells themselves using electricity to communicate," he said.

In an experiment, a frog re-grew one of its legs in six months. But scientists first had to makechanges in the characteristics of the animal's cells.

Researchers say they have a lot more work to do before the process can be used on humanbeings. They have to learn which bioelectric signals can influence the formation of whichorgans.

Adams says "it's better to regenerate that organ so that you don't have issues of theimmune system attacking, the way we do now with transplants. The hope is that we'll be ableto help the body create a better replacement -- really, a perfect replacement, for the personof exactly what they've lost."

Jonathan Butcher is a professor and biomedical engineer at Cornell University in New York. Heand other researchers have combined mechanical engineering with developmental biology tocreate working heart valves from 3D-printed tissue.

Children may get the most help from engineered organs or partial organs that can grow as thechild does.
