Faradaywastheinventoroftheelectricgenerator(发电机)andtheelectricmotor.Faraday'sfathersufferedfromlong-timehealthproblems.Asaresult,Faraday'sfamilyhadlittlemoneyandFaradaygotonlytheleastformalschooling.Actually.hesometimeshadonlyenoughtoeat.ButFaradaywascuriousanddeterminedtolearn.WhileworkinginLondonasateenager,hehadachancetoknowvariousbooksandhereadeverythinghecouldgethishandson.ThusFaradaysooneducatedhimselfonavarietyofscientificsubjects,andhislifeasascientistbegan.

In1812,FaradayattendedfourlecturesattheRoyalInstitutiongivenbyafamouschemistnamedHumphreyDavy.AfterwardsFaradaysentalettertoDavy,expressingastronginterestinthesubjectscoveredinthelecturesandofferinghisservicesasahelper.Ayearlater,DavyacceptedFaradayashislabassistant.DavyalsotookFaradaywithhimonan18-monthtourofEurope,whereFaradaymetsomeofthemostfamousscientistsoftheday.

ThankstohisworkwithDavy,Faradaygainedacompletescientificeducation.Hesoonbegantodoresearchandexperimentswithelectricity.Heconstructedtwomachinestocreateelectromagneticrotation(电磁旋转),theforceusedtopowerelectricmotors.ApartfromhelpingDavymostly,Faradaybegantoappearonhisownasachemistandscientistofgreatimportance.Hebegantogivefrequentlectures.Soonhewasacceptedasagiftedlecturerandpublishedmanyresearchpapers.

WhenDavyretiredin1827,FaradaytookhisplaceastheheadofthechemistrydepartmentoftheRoyalInstitute.Uponacceptingthepositionhecouldfocusonhisownresearch,andFaraday'sbest-knownworkbeganinthe1830s.In1831,hediscoveredelectromagneticinduction(感应).AndforthenexteightyearsFaradayworkedlonghoursinthelaboratorywhichdidharmtohishealth.Bytheendofthedecadehewasinsuchpoorhealththathisresearchdidnotbeginagainuntil1845.

Inthemid-1850s,asFaradaygraduallylosttheabilitytotakecareofhimselfhewasforcedtoretirefromhisscientificstudies.QueenVictoriaofferedhimFaradayknighthood(爵士封号),butherefusedit.HelivedatHamptonCourt,whichQueenVictoriaofferedhim,untilhisdeathonAugust25,1867.
