这里有著名的“黄麻起义”、红四方面军的诞生，刘邓大军千里跃进大别山，还有无数革命先辈们在这里留下了战斗的足迹。

任何事物的名字由来也是有缘由的，大别山名字的由来也有很多种说法，

（1）有人说它得名于李白，相传当年李白登上了大别山主峰白马尖，观赏了南北两侧的景色，发现山南山北两侧景色截然不同，不禁赞叹道：

“山之南山花烂漫，山之北白雪皑皑，此山大别于他山也！

”大别山由此得名。

（2）另外一个说法是大别山由于它分开了长江和淮河两大水系，也分开了吴国、楚国两地，从而使得南北两地的气候环境和风俗民情截然有别，所以叫做大别山。

（3）还有一个说法传说在洪荒时，亿万生灵被挤压在昏暗的天地之间，大别山分出了天和地，分出了白天和黑夜，使天地有别，便取名为大别山。
