阿波罗任务的本意是揭示月球的真相。
可实际上,它告诉我们的却是有关地球和我们自身的真相。
InJuly1969,soonaftertheirreturnfromthemoon,NeilArmstrongandBuzzAldrinwereshownfootageoftheworld’sreactiontothelunarlanding.TheysawtheUSnewscasterWalterCronkitewipingawayhistears;peoplegatheredaroundtelevisionsfromChinatoBrazil;pavementsoutsideTVshopscrammedaspeoplewatchedinawe.AldrinturnedtoArmstrong.“Neil,”hesaid,“wemissedthewholething”.
1969年7月,从月球返回后不久,有人给尼尔阿姆斯特朗和巴兹奥尔德林放了一段录像,让他们看看全世界人们对登月事件的反应。

从一开始当阿波罗八号的全体乘员成为第一批离开其所在地球轨道的时候,这一切就不言而喻了。

inaword,restless.Curiosityisneversatisfied,itmerelyfindsnewtargets.QuitehowquicklytheshiftcanoccurwaslearntbyPeteConrad,thethirdmantowalkontheMoon(andthefirsttofalloveronit).OnceArmstrongandAldrinhadclaimedtheprize,noonewasinterestedinApollo12.ConradlaterappearedinanAmericanExpressadvertoffamousAmericansnobodyrecognised.(OthersincludedMelBlanc,thevoiceofBugsBunny.)YetinmanywaysConrad’swasthemostinterestingApollomissionofall.Hisfellowmoonwalker,AlBean,neverthemostnaturallygiftedastronaut,compensatedwithsheerhardwork.Finallystandingonthelunarsurface,hethrewhissilverNasabadgeintothedistance,knowingthatthemoonwalkhadearnedhimagoldone.ButastheyflewbacktoEarth,heturnedtoConradandadmitteddisappointmentintheMoonitself:
“It’skindoflikethesongIsThatAllThereIs?
”Anothertimelesstruth:
achievementsthemselvesaren’twhatcount,it’sthefactthatyouworkedforthem.

人类的好奇心永远不能得到满足,只不过它找到了新的目标。
皮特·康拉德,第三个踏上月球的人(而且是第一个在月球上跌倒的人)总算体会到这一切改变得有多快。
一旦阿姆斯特朗和奥尔德林抢去了风头,再也没人对阿波罗十二号号感兴趣了。
后来康拉德在美国运通在推出的“默默无闻之美国幕后工作人”榜上有名。
(其他人还包括《兔八哥》的配音演员梅尔·布兰科)。
然而,从很多角度来看,康拉德的登月之旅才是所有阿波罗任务中最为有趣的一次任务。
和他一起登月的伙伴阿兰·比恩,并不是最有天赋的宇航员,但是却能做到以勤补拙。
当他最终站在月球的表面上,他把美国国家航空航天局颁发的银质徽章扔向远方,因为他知道在月球上行走已经为他赢得了金质徽章。
但是,当他们重返地球,他转向康拉德,承认自己对月球本身有些失望:
“它有点像那首名叫《一切不过如此》的歌曲。
”另外一个永恒的真相就是:
成绩本身并不重要,重要的是你为之付出的努力。

当比恩重返地球之后,他总是坐在购物中心,感叹于人类生活的丰富多彩。
而且,从那以后,他再也没有抱怨过天气:

艾德加·米切尔,第六位登月的宇航员,曾说过:
