ThepainterGeorgiaO'KeeffewasborninWisconsinin1887andgrewuponherfamily'sfarm.AtseventeenshedecidedtobeanartistandleftthefarmforschoolsinChicagoandNewYork,butsheneverlostherbondwiththeland.Likemostpainters,O'Keeffepaintedthethingsthatweremostimportanttoher,andnearlyallherworksaresimplifiedportrayalsofnature.

O'KeeffebecamefamouswhenherpaintingswerediscoveredandexhibitedinNewYorkbythephotographerAlfredStieglitz,whomshemarriedin1924.DuringavisittoNewMexicoin1929,O'Keeffewassomovedbythebleaklandscapeandbroadskiesofthewesterndesertthatshebegantopaintitsimages.Cows'skullsandotherbleachedbonesfoundinthedesertfiguredprominentlyinherpaintings.Whenherhusbanddiedin1946,shemovedtoNewMexicopermanentlyandusedthehorizonlinesofthedesert,colorfulflowers,rocks,barrenhills,andtheskyassubjectsforherpaintings.AlthoughO'Keeffepaintedherbestknownworksinthe1920s,1930sand1940s,shecontinuedtoproducetributestothewesterndesertuntilherdeathin1986.
