 WhatmadeJazzsignificantlydifferentfromtheotherearlierformsofmusicwastheuseofimprovisation.Jazzdisplayedabreakfromtraditionalmusicwhereacomposerwroteanentirepieceofmusiconpaper,leavingthemusicianstobreaktheirbacksplayingexactlywhatwaswrittenonthescore.InaJazzpiece,however,thesongissimplyastartingpoint,orsortofskeletalguidefortheJazzmusicianstoimprovisearound.Actually,manyoftheearlyJazzmusicianswerebadsightreadersandsomecouldn’tevenreadmusicatall. Generallyspeaking,theseearlymusicianscouldn’tmakeverymuchmoneyandwerestuckworkingmenialjobstomakealiving.ThesecondwaveofNewOrleansJazzmusiciansincludedsuchmemorableplayersasJoeOliver,KidOry,andJellyRollMorton.Thesemenformedsmallbandsandtookthemusicofearliermusicians,improveditscomplexity,andgainedgreatersuccess.Thismusicisknownas“hotJazz”duetotheenormouslyfastspeedsandrhythmicdrive.
