Bluewhalesarethelargestanimalseverknowntohaveexistedontheplanet,andtheycangrowtoalengthof100feetandweighmorethan330,000pounds. ButrecentlyresearchershavefoundthatthesewhalesareonthemoveandtheyhavemigratedfromCaliforniawaterstoareasoffCanadaandAlaskaforthefirsttimesincecommercialwhalingendedin1965.
Theresearchersidentified15bluewhalesthathaveappearedoffthecoastofBritishColumbiaandtheGulfofAlaskasince1997.FourofthesewhaleswererecognizedasonesthatwereoncesightedoffCaliforniashores,suggestingthatthewhalesarereturningtoanoldmigrationpatternbetweenthecoasts.
Beforecommercialwhalingbeganintheearly1900s,bluewhaleswerefoundwidelythroughouttheNorthPacificandCaliforniawaters.Butfromthe1920stothe1960s,whalingseverelyreducedthewhalepopulations.BluewhalesneverrecoveredintheNorthernPacific,makingsightingsinthisarearare. However,muchlargergroupsofwhaleshavebeenobservedclosetoCaliforniasincethe1970s.
ThescientistshadpreviouslythoughtthattheCaliforniapopulationwasseparatefromthepopulationthathadhistoricallylivedinNorthPacificwaters.ButthecurrentstudyshowsthatwhalesoffthecoastofBritishColumbiaandtheGulfofAlaskaarelikelypartoftheCaliforniapopulation.
