Ifsuccessful,Kazakhstanwillbethefirstcountryintheworldtobringwildtigersbacktoanentireregionwheretheyhavediedoutfornearlyhalfacentury.Tigerreintroductionprojectshaveonlybeenachievedwithinnationalbordersandinareasthatareconsideredcurrenttigerhabitats.Kazakhstan'stigerreintroductionprogramisuniqueanditbadlyrequirestherestorationofavastforestthatispartofthewildtiger'shistoricalrange.

Sincethebeginningofthe20thcentury,wildtigershavelostover90percentoftheirhistoricalrange.Wildtigershavecompletelydisappearedfromtheregionsincethelate1940s,duetothelossofhabitat.Toprepareforthereturnofwildtigers,on1stJanuary2021KazakhstanwillsetupanewnaturereserveinthesouthwesternIliBalkhash,inordertorestoretheuniqueforesthabitat.Thiswillincludetheprotectionofexistingwildlife,andreintroducingimportantprey(猎物),suchastheendangeredwildBactriandeer(中亚红鹿).

RestoringtigerswillalsohelpprotectLakeBalkhashandpreventitfromrepeatingthefateoftheAralSea,formerlytheworld'sfourthlargestlakeandnow10percentofitsoriginalsize.“Thehardworkremainsaheadofus.Wehavetosparenoefforttomakethisregionreadyfortigersandinvolvealltherelevantpeopletomakethishappen.Thatmeansdealingwithillegalactivities,havingthesepeoplewhogovernparksbewelltrainedandequipped,increasingpreypopulationsandinvolvinglocalcommunities,”saidEkaterinaVorobyeva,DirectoroftheWWFprogram.
