“It’sunfairforpeopletopiratemovies,”says15-year-oldHadaiaAzadEzzulddin.Moviepiracy“takesmoneyoutofthepocketsofthousandsofpeopleinthemovieindustry,”shenotes.Victimsincludefamousactorsanddirectorsaswellaslocaltheaterownersandtheiremployees.

Hadaiacameupwithanideathatcouldhelpstopmoviepiracy.Hadaia’sideausesinfrared(红外线的)light.Thisrangeoflightisinvisibletothehumaneye.Itisvisible,however,tomanytypesofcameras.Theaterownerscouldplacesmallinfraredlightsontheirmoviescreens.Thelightswouldnotdisturbpeoplewatchingthemovie.Itwould,however,distorttherecordingsmadebymanytypesofcameras.

Totestheridea,Hadaiabuiltaboxwithamoviescreeninside.Then,sheprojectedimagesonthatscreenthroughaholeinthebox.Shetookrecordingsofthoseimages,usingninedifferenttypesofcameras.Theseincludedthetypesfoundincellphonesaswellascamcorders.Duringsometests,shealsoturnedonlightemittingdiodes(发光二极管),orLEDs.TheLEDswereembedded(植入的)inacertainplacebehindthemoviescreen.Theygaveoutinfraredlight.

Sureenough,sheshowed,apiratedmovieincludedoddstripesorspotsifithadbeenrecordedwhiletheLEDswereon.ItmightbepossibletousetheLEDstoflashthedateandtimeonthemoviescreen.Theinformationwouldthenappearintheillegalrecordings.Theaterownersorpolicemightusetheinformationtotrackdownthepirates.
