Oh,Iseesomeofyouhave.Well,vitalismandmechanismaretwocompletelyoppositeapproachestohumanphysiology.Accordingtothevitalist,thelawsofphysicsandchemistryalonecannotexplaintheprocessesoflife.Tothevitalist,thereisaso-calledvitalforce,andthisvitalforceistotallyseparatefromthatofenergy.Asyoumayhaveguessed,vitalismisakindofphilosophicalapproach.Mechanism,ontheotherhand,istheviewthatalllifephenomena,nomatterhowcomplex,canbeexplainedaccordingtochemicalandphysicallaws.Sincewecansupportmechanismthroughscientificexperimentation,themodernscientisttendstobeamechanist.Butvitalismisnottotallydismissed,especiallyinfieldssuchasbrainphysiology,wheretermssuchashumanconsciousnesshaven'tbeendefinedyetinphysic-chemicalterms.Irecentlyreadaninterestingarticledealtwiththisveryquestion.Isthemindseparatefrombrain,oristhemindonlythechemicalandphysiologicalworkingsofthebrain?
