7."TheLoveSongofJ.AlfredPrufrock"isEliot'smostamaz-ingearlyachievement.Ittellsthemeditationofanagingyoungmanoverthebusinessofproposingmarriage.Thepo-emisinaformofdramaticmonologue,suggestinganironiccontrastbetweenapretended"lovesong"andaconfessionofthespeaker'sincapabilityoffacinguptoloveandtolifeinasterileupper-classworld.Prufrock,theprotagonistofthepoem,isneurotic,self-important,illogicalandincapableofaction.Heisakindoftragicfigurecaughtinsenseofdefeat-edidealismandtorturedbyunsatisfieddesires.Thepoemisintenselyanti-romanticwithvisualimagesofhardobjectsandevasivehellishatmosphere.

TheWasteLandisapoemconcernedwiththespiritualbreakupofamoderncivilizationinwhichhumanlifehaslostitsmeaning,significanceandpurpose.Thepoemhasdevel-opedawholesetofhistorical,culturalandreligiousthemes;butitisoftenregardedasbeingprimarilyareflectionofthe20thcenturypeople'sdisillusionmentandfrustrationinasterileandfutilesociety.
