Someofthedamagedcorals(珊瑚)willsurvive,includingmoreheat-resistant(耐热的)species.Butmanyotherswereprobably“literallycooked”atthepeakoftheheatwaveinearly2020,saysHughes.Otherswilldiemoreslowlyfromstressoverthenextfewmonths,headds.Hugheshasseriousconcernaboutthesouthernreef,whichwasmostlyunaffectedinformerbleachingeventsandhasn’tdevelopedthesameheatresistanceasotherparts.

The2016and2017eventskilledabouthalfthecoralonthereef.Itusuallytakesadecadeforevenfast-growingcoralstorecover,meaningthelatestdamagewillseriouslyweakenthereef’sabilitytorecover,saysHughes.Thehighfrequencyofmassbleachinginrecentyearshasbeendrivenbyclimatechange,whichresultsfromhumanactivityandissteadilyraisingoceantemperatures.Theonlywaytodealwiththeproblemistoimmediatelyreducethereleaseofgreenhousegases,saysHughes.
