Content-BasedInstructionreferstoanapproachtosecondlanguageteachinginwhichteachingisorganizedaroundthecontentorinformationthatstudentswillacquire,ratherthanaroundalinguisticorothertypeofsyllabus.Itisbasedonthefollowingtwocentralprinciples:
a.Peoplelearnasecondlanguagemoresuccessfullywhentheyusethelanguageasameansofacquiringinformation,ratherthanasanendinitself.b.Content-BasedInstructionbetterreflectslearners’needsforlearningasecondlanguage.
II.CharacteristicsofCBI
1)Learnersareexposedtolanguagewhilelearningaboutothercontentareas.
2)Contentareasarerelevanttolearners'academicand/orprofessionalneeds.
3)Langueiscontextualizedthroughtheserelevantcontentarea,andthus,isalsorelevanttolearners’needs.
4)Afocusisplacedondevelopingacademicand/orprofessionallanguageproficiency.
5)Authenticmaterialsareusedtopresentcontentmatter.
6)Theuseofauthenticmaterialslendsitselftotheintegrationofskills,toincreasedmotivation,andtoincreasedcognitiveandlinguisticcomplexity.
III.TheadvantagesofCBI
1)CBImakesstudentsfeelthatlearningalanguageisinterestingandmotivation.
2)CBIalsohelpsstudentsdevelopamuchwiderknowledgeoftheworld.
3)CBIhelpsstudentstodevelopvaluablestudyskillssuchasnotetaking,summarizingandextractingkeyinformationfromtexts,whichisquiteusefulfortheirfuturestudy.
4)CBIemphasizesthecommunicativefunctionoflanguage.
5)Theinclusionofagroupworkelementwithintheframeworkgivenabovecanalsohelpstudentstodeveloptheircollaborativeskillsandteamworkspirits,whichcanhavegreatsocialvalue.
IV.ThedisadvantagesofCBI
1)Forteachers,becausetheyhavenoexperienceaboutCBI,theyarenotsurewhethertheycanapplyitsuccessfully.MostmodelsofCBIneedthecollaborationbetweenthelanguageteacherandthesubjectmatterteachers.Itisdifficultforthemtocooperatewitheachotherandgetabalancebetweencontentandlanguage.LanguageproficiencyofthesubjectmatterteacherandthelanguageteacheralsohinderstheminapplyingCBI.Howtoassesssubjectmatterandlanguageskillswithintheeducationalsystemisalsoaproblem.
2)Forstudents,somestudentsmayfeelconfusedormayevenfeelthattheyaren’timprovingtheirlanguageskills,asCBIisn'texplicitlyfocusedonlanguagelearning.Thesharingofinformationinthetargetlanguagemayalsocausegreatdifficulties.SomestudentswithinadequatebackgroundknowledgeandweakvocabularymaygetdiscouragedinCBIclass.
3)CBIistooteacher-driven.ESLteachersadjustteachingmaterialstomakethemaccessibletotheirstudentsratherthanteachingtheirstudentstheskillsoflearningontheirown.Itdoesnotcreateindependentlearners.
