II.CharacteristicsofCBI

1）Learnersareexposedtolanguagewhilelearningaboutothercontentareas.

2）Contentareasarerelevanttolearners'academicand/orprofessionalneeds.

3）Langueiscontextualizedthroughtheserelevantcontentarea,andthus,isalsorelevanttolearners’needs.

4）Afocusisplacedondevelopingacademicand/orprofessionallanguageproficiency.

5）Authenticmaterialsareusedtopresentcontentmatter.

6）Theuseofauthenticmaterialslendsitselftotheintegrationofskills,toincreasedmotivation,andtoincreasedcognitiveandlinguisticcomplexity.

III.TheadvantagesofCBI

1）CBImakesstudentsfeelthatlearningalanguageisinterestingandmotivation.

2）CBIalsohelpsstudentsdevelopamuchwiderknowledgeoftheworld.

3）CBIhelpsstudentstodevelopvaluablestudyskillssuchasnotetaking,summarizingandextractingkeyinformationfromtexts,whichisquiteusefulfortheirfuturestudy.

4）CBIemphasizesthecommunicativefunctionoflanguage.

5）Theinclusionofagroupworkelementwithintheframeworkgivenabovecanalsohelpstudentstodeveloptheircollaborativeskillsandteamworkspirits,whichcanhavegreatsocialvalue.

IV.ThedisadvantagesofCBI

1）Forteachers,becausetheyhavenoexperienceaboutCBI,theyarenotsurewhethertheycanapplyitsuccessfully.MostmodelsofCBIneedthecollaborationbetweenthelanguageteacherandthesubjectmatterteachers.Itisdifficultforthemtocooperatewitheachotherandgetabalancebetweencontentandlanguage.LanguageproficiencyofthesubjectmatterteacherandthelanguageteacheralsohinderstheminapplyingCBI.Howtoassesssubjectmatterandlanguageskillswithintheeducationalsystemisalsoaproblem.

2）Forstudents,somestudentsmayfeelconfusedormayevenfeelthattheyaren’timprovingtheirlanguageskills,asCBIisn'texplicitlyfocusedonlanguagelearning.Thesharingofinformationinthetargetlanguagemayalsocausegreatdifficulties.SomestudentswithinadequatebackgroundknowledgeandweakvocabularymaygetdiscouragedinCBIclass.

3）CBIistooteacher-driven.ESLteachersadjustteachingmaterialstomakethemaccessibletotheirstudentsratherthanteachingtheirstudentstheskillsoflearningontheirown.Itdoesnotcreateindependentlearners.
