Theanalysiswaspartofthehugedate-gatheringprocessforglobaleducationrankings,theTrendsinInternationalMathematicsandScienceStudy(TIMSS)andProgressinInternationalReadingLiteracyStudy(PIRLS)

“Ithinkweunderestimatetheimpactofsleep.Ourdatashowthatacrosscountriesinternationally,onaverage,childrenwhohavemoresleepachievehigherinmaths,scienceandreading.Thatisexactlywhatourdatashow,”saysChadMinnichoftheTIMSSandPIRLSInternationalStudyCenter.

“It’sthesamelinkforchildrenwhoarelackingbasicnutrition,”saysMrMinnich,basedattheLynchSchoolofEducation,BostonCollege.“Ifyouareunabletoconcentrate,toattendmentally,youareunabletoachieveatyourbestlevel,becauseyourmindandbodyareinneedofsomethingmorebasic.Sleepisafundamentalneedforallchildren.Ifteachersreportsuchlargeproportionsofchildrensufferingfromlackofsleep,it’shavingasignificantimpact.Butworsethanthat,teachersarehavingtoadjusttheirinstructionbasedonthosechildrenwhoaresufferingfromalackofsleep.Thechildrenwhoaresufferingfromalackofsleeparedrivingdowninstruction.”
